Yanmar Power Solutions' GH-FC hydrogen fuel cell series has achieved Type Approval from DNV, one of the maritime industry's leading classification societies, marking an important step toward wider adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology in maritime applications.

For shipbuilders, system integrators and vessel operators, the approval provides greater certainty when integrating the GH-FC series into future projects and can help reduce the certification burden.

Eric Tigelaar, Department Manager Commercial Marine at YANMAR Europe, explains: "This certification strengthens our ability to support customers across Europe and beyond as they explore hydrogen as part of their decarbonisation strategy. With its modular design, flexible configuration and ease of installation, the GH-FC series can support a wide range of vessel applications."

Available in 80, 160, 240 and 320 kW configurations, the GH-FC series has already been deployed on vessels in Japan, from workboats to passenger ships, including MOL Techno-Trade's "HANARIA" and NYK Line's new cruise ship "Amane".

The system generates electricity using hydrogen, with zero CO₂ emissions during operation.

At SMM Hamburg last week, Yanmar brought together teams from Yanmar Power Technology in Japan and from YANMAR Europe at the Japan Pavilion.

Visitors explored Yanmar's alternative-fuel capabilities, including Dual Fuel, LNG and Methanol, for both ocean-going and inland maritime applications.

The stand became a meeting point for Yanmar's European distributor network, customers, and the Japan-based product team, offering an opportunity to discuss technical questions and upcoming projects directly with the team behind them.

Thank you to everyone who staffed the stand and made the week run smoothly, from both sides of the world.

Four editions. Four continents. One partnership.

Yanmar's involvement with the America's Cup began in 2013 as Official Technical Partner to Oracle Team USA in San Francisco. It continued through Bermuda, New Zealand and Barcelona, each edition pushing further into foiling, hydrodynamics, lightweight materials and energy management.

That partnership now enters its next chapter. Yanmar has been confirmed as Official Sponsor and Official Marine Sports Sponsor of the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup, taking place in Naples in 2027.

The future of fishing vessels won't be built around a single fuel.

At Nor-Fishing 2026 in Trondheim, YANMAR Europe joined Yanmar Norway and Maritim Motor AS to discuss technologies shaping the future of vessel operations.

A key focus was Yanmar's future multifuel approach, including hydrogen, methanol and LNG. There is unlikely to be a one-size-fits-all solution for every fishing fleet. The right pathway will depend on vessel operation, region and available infrastructure.

The stand also highlighted the VC30, Yanmar's third-generation vessel control system, designed to simplify engine control and onboard monitoring through a single interface.

But ultimately, exhibitions like Nor-Fishing aren't just about what we present. They're about listening to the people who operate these vessels every day, understanding the challenges they face, and discussing what they need next.
