What if archaeology could help lead spatial development, rather than simply respond to it?

At the upcoming EAA in Athens, Session #183, “Archaeology in the Lead: Driving Integrated Interdisciplinary Approaches to Sustainable Urban and Environmental Development”, will explore this question.

Urbanisation, climate adaptation and sustainable development call for more integrated and proactive approaches. Three perspectives will come together:

• EARTH: Why should archaeology be integrated earlier, and what value can it bring?
• Geosonda: The How: How can technology, data and innovative investigation enable this shift?
• NIKU: What does it mean to reimagine archaeology as a leading interdisciplinary discipline?

Together, we will discuss why change is needed, how to create it, and what can enable it — from technology and new ways of working to policy, regulation, and the roles of public and private actors.

Our ambition is to turn this into more than a conversation: a starting point for collaboration and potentially a taskforce to take the idea forward.
