Lot 695 | Italy, Massa di Lunigiana. 2 Doppio (Quadrupla) 1593

Struck under Alberico I Cybo Malaspina (1568–1623), this impressive gold multiple reflects the court culture of late Renaissance Italy, where even small principalities asserted sovereignty through coinage. The armoured portrait communicates dynastic authority, while the crowned arms on the reverse speaks the clear visual language of legitimacy and rule.

With a weight of 13.17 g and noted as RRR, this is an exceptionally rare type, made even more compelling by its documented provenance (ex InAsta 13, 12 November 2005, lot 879). Despite minor flan cracks, the piece presents with a notably sharp strike and is offered Extremely Fine+.

Lot 769 – Piedfort Dukaton Amsterdam 1673 (Zilveren Rijder)

Ever since the Middle Ages, all coins for the province of Holland were struck at the mint in Dordrecht. But in the Disaster Year 1672, when the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands faced enemy armies from multiple sides, the mint was forced to relocate northwards to Amsterdam.

During its brief operation between November 1672 and November 1673, only two coin types were struck: the Golden Ducat and the Silver Rider or Dukaton. A piedfort is a double-weight striking, produced not for circulation but as a prestige piece, often intended for presentation or as a collector’s specimen.

After just one year of very limited production, the Amsterdam mint returned to Dordrecht, making these pieces exceptionally scarce. A piedfort from this period is among the rarest survivals of Dutch seventeenth-century numismatic history.

Lot 25 | Austria, Styria. Thaler 1682 (over 1678)
Struck at the Graz mint under Leopold I “the Hogmouth”, this substantial silver thaler reflects the monetary realities of the late 17th-century Habsburg Empire. The clearly visible overdate 1682 over 1678 illustrates the continued reuse of dies, a practice driven by constant demand for large silver coinage during years of military pressure and fiscal strain.

The obverse features the unmistakable right-facing bust of Leopold I, whose elongated jaw became one of the most recognisable imperial portraits of early modern Europe. On the reverse, the crowned arms affirm Habsburg authority over the Austrian states, with Styria occupying a strategically vital position within the empire.

Certified PCGS AU58, weighing 28.57 g, and originating from the Ex Cherry Tree Collection, this thaler represents the type of historically layered, carefully selected material for which Schulman has been known since 1880. An invitation to explore Austrian thaler coinage at its most authentic.

Lot 35 | Spain, Seville. 8 Reales 1731 PA. Felipe V (1700–1746)

Minted in Seville during the reign of Felipe V, this elegant 8 Reales embodies the dawn of Bourbon Spain. Its crowned arms between assayer’s marks and the cross in polylobe reverse with castles and lions reflect both continuity and renewal, a visual assertion of legitimacy after the War of the Spanish Succession.

Struck in fine silver, this coin represents the Spanish Empire’s maritime might at its zenith, circulating from Andalusian ports to the Americas. In contrast with the course pieces from the New World, struck mainly for transporting massive quantities of newly-mined silver, their Spanish counterparts are extremely well-made and attractive. Its preservation in PCGS MS63 attests to exceptional quality, a near-flawless survivor of 18th-century trade and power.

Lot 251 – Transylvania, Michael I Apafi. Thaler 1681 AI

After a disastrous series of battles against the Ottomans in the 16th century, the kingdom of Hungary was left severely weakened. Due to inability to protect the entirety of Hungary, the eastern parts seceded and thus the principality of Transylvania was created. These princes struggled to maintain their independence between their slowly recovering neighbour Hungary and the Ottoman Turks.

Prince Michael I was forced to ally with the Turks to counter the pressure from the Holy Roman Empire. It was only until the Battle of Vienna in 1683 and the crushing defeat of the Ottomans that some form of peace was signed. The coin offered is thus witness to a highly turbulent period in a contested frontier region, yet still of high artistic merit and preserved in outstanding quality!

Netherlands, Zeeland. Silver Ducat 1682, struck in gold. 34.73 grams

There are several striking variants of Zeelandic thalers and guilders, featuring different weights, metal strikes, and textual variations. Perhaps the most spectacular is the gold off-metal strike of the silver Ducat, known only from the year 1682. Struck at a massive weight of around 35 grams (approximately equal to 10 gold ducats), this was one of the heaviest gold coins of the Netherlands. Less than ten of these pieces are known, with most in public collections and very few ever appear on the market. This is, in our humble opinion, the highlight of the Zeeuwse Leeuw collection!

Lot 1309 | Netherlands, Middelburg. ½ Velddaalder 1572

Struck in the turbulent year of 1572, this rare ½ Velddaalder was issued during the siege of Middelburg, a city caught between Spanish forces and the rising Dutch insurgence. Minted on the typical square planchet of a siege coinage, these coins were struck by the defending Spanish regiment to pay their soldiers. After two years of siege with periods of interruption the Spanish commander surrendered, and Middelburg was now in the hands of the rebels.

This piece, preserved with a beautiful dark patina, belongs to the esteemed Zeeuwse Leeuw Collection and stands as a survivor of the struggle for Dutch independence.

Lot 1343 | Friesland. Pattern Rider Schelling 1682

A remarkable silver pattern for a ruiterschelling of Friesland, dated 1682. The Ruiterschelling or Rijderschelling was a popular denomination produced during the late 17th century, and was struck for in many different provinces and cities. The province of Friesland, however, never produced any for circulation. This pattern is evidence that they clearly had plans to do so, in the end decided not to go through with it. Today these patterns are very rare and represent a “missing” denomination in Frisian numismatics.

From the important collection of Lodewijk Beuth, acquired privately from Schulman in 1956, a magnificent survivor of late 17th-century Dutch mint artistry.

Lot 1379 | Flanders, Louis of Male. ‘New’ Écu d’Or with the lion (1373–1383)

A magnificent ‘golden shield’ of Louis of Male, struck in the late 14th century during the economic zenith of medieval Flanders. The obverse shows the Count enthroned, holding sword and shield, a scene of chivalric power rendered in the finest Gothic style. The design is directly loaned from the French écu d’or and suggests the king of France and the count of Flanders to be on equal standing.
Weighing 4.46 g and struck in remarkably sharp detail, this piece is virtually Fleur-de-Coin, a masterpiece of medieval gold engraving.

Lot 1056 | China. Silver Dollar 1932

The year 1932 marked the beginning of a new era in Chinese coinage with the introduction of the so-called “Junk Dollar”. Its first design, showing birds gliding over a junk ship beneath the rising sun, was meant to symbolize national renewal. Yet public opinion quickly turned against it, as many felt the sun too closely resembled the flag of Japan. By the following year both the birds and the sun had vanished from the design.

This brief first emission has since become one of the most sought-after types among collectors, embodying both artistry and the political sensitivity of its time. A fascinating relic of modern Chinese history and an enduring favorite among silver dollar enthusiasts.
