Definitely a post to SAVE and refer to as your little one gets older.

Sleep begets sleep and when a child naps well during the day it definitely helps their night sleep.

However there is a line! So if your child has more day sleep than is suitable for their age then this can impact their night sleep.

A child needs a total amount of sleep in 24 hours so if they have too much during the day this can cause night wakes and early mornings.

Please note that these times are a maximum so don’t worry if your child doesn’t quite hit the numbers stated here.

If on the other hand your child is way under these times then it is likely they are not sleeping well during the day and their naps are too short. If that is the case then get in touch. Day sleep is definitely more challenging for most kids (compared to night sleep) so if you are worried then contact me and I can take a look at your child’s schedule.

You can DM me or book an advice call on my website (link in bio).

Fixed schedules:

Whilst your child is on 3 or more naps I would recommend that you continue to follow wake windows (and not a fixed nap or bedtime). They haven’t got enough stamina to be pushed to a fixed schedule at this point. Their naps and bedtime might be slightly different each day and as frustrating as this may be it is the best thing for your child’s sleep 💤

So I would recommend following age appropriate wake windows for their nap times and bedtime. See my previous post for these.

Once a baby is able to handle a 3 hour wake window they will should be on 2 naps per day. This typically happens around 6-7 (although sometimes even 8 months).

If baby is on a 2 naps a day and is napping well then you can put them on a fixed schedule. This means they will nap and have bedtime at the same time every day.

A recommended schedule for this age could be:

7am Wake
10-11:30am Nap 1
2:30-4pm Nap 2
7pm Bedtime

I would recommend sticking to the times you have chosen every day as this helps to set your baby’s circadian rhythm. It is likely you will need to wake your baby up to keep on track!

If baby wakes earlier in the morning or does a shorter nap then you can put them down for their next sleep up to 30 minutes earlier than usual.

If you are completely stuck and have no idea what your babies schedule or routine should look like then get in touch. I offer 30 and 45 minute advice calls which are perfect to discuss schedules and routines. You can DM me or book a call via my website.

Wake windows.

These are KEY to helping your baby to sleep well. Every child is slightly different but these are the average times you are looking at per age.

If we put our babies and toddlers to bed too early they often protest, cry and take a long time to fall asleep. Then because their sleep pressure wasn’t high enough they do not sleep for long.

Also if we put our babies and toddlers to bed too late they often protest, cry and take a long time to fall asleep. This is because their cortisol and adrenaline levels have increased making it harder for them to fall asleep. They also do not sleep well (or sleep long enough).

As well as short naps both of these issues also cause night wakings and waking too early in the morning.

Finding the right wake window for your child is key to helping them to sleep well. I would recommend using the times above ALONG with their sleepy cues.

Try a wake window for 3 days, if it isn’t working then try 15 mins earlier or later. Make sure you give each time you try at least 3 days to see if it is right for your child.

If you are struggling to find the appropriate wake window for your child send me a DM! Finding the right time for your child is one of the things I help families with every day 💤💤

I have been receiving many messages asking if I am taking new clients again so I thought I would leave an update here.

Some of you already know I was waiting for a surgery date and this is now planned for next week. So unfortunately I won’t be taking any new clients or able to offer any sleep advice calls for a little while.

It’s a major surgery but I’m remaining optimistic and hoping my recovery is smooth and that I’ll be back doing what I love again soon and helping families to improve their little ones sleep.

Thank you again for all of the sweet messages I am receiving to check how I am. I appreciate them all ❤️

If you are looking for some sleep help now please contact . Anna is a friend and colleague of mine. We trained together and use very similar methods. Her Instagram is mainly written in Italian but she also speaks English and regularly works with English speaking clients.

Hopefully Ill be back here soon, until then take care and enjoy this beautiful season 🌸

I’ve been MIA for a little while so thought I would explain why.

I have been struggling with some health issues for the past year. After many tests and appointments we have found that I need to have 2 surgeries in the next few months, both requiring some recovery time.

So I made the decision to stop working for a while, until my surgeries were done and I had had some time to recover.

We booked a week away for Xmas to have a nice family week of fun before my surgeries but on the first day I fell and broke my leg. So I spent 6 days over Xmas in hospital. It was really tough being away from the boys and I was devastated to be missing the fun week we had planned.

I had surgery on my leg on Xmas day. Two weeks later and we are back in Amsterdam and I’m working on my recovery. I will still have these other two surgeries in the coming months.

So I won’t be around here for a while and unfortunately won’t be working with clients for at least the next 3 months. It was such a big decision for me as I love my business and enjoy my “job” so much. However I know that I need to prioritize getting better. Once I do I will be right back helping little ones and their parents to sleep better.

Thank you so much to all the families I worked with in 2023, there were over 100 of you and I am so grateful I had the chance to help you ❤️

Wishing you all a wonderful start to 2024 and I’ll be back when I can.

Much love, Jo ❤️

Do you spend hours researching online or reading books to learn how to help your baby to sleep? Is the world of baby sleep confusing and overwhelming?

This is what I thought 4.5 years ago when my almost 2 year old son wasn’t sleeping well. I tried everything I could to try and fix it, but I couldn’t. Eventually I hired a sleep coach who CHANGED MY LIFE. She saved my sanity, my marriage and I became more rested and happier within a few days. My only regret was not doing it earlier as I know I would have enjoyed early motherhood more if I was sleeping better.

After that I decided to train and certify as a sleep coach so I could help other parents and babies in the same way.

With my second son things were very different. I used my training and experience to help him sleep well from a young age.

It can be really hectic and busy having two kids and a business. I’m so grateful that their sleep isn’t something I ever have to worry about.

If you have a little one that doesn’t sleep well, reach out for a free chat. I would love to know more about your situation and let you know how I can help.

Let me take all the guess work away and help your little one to sleep better in a matter of days. You won’t regret it!

You can book a call via the link in my bio or reach out via DM.

Timers.

Many toddlers and older kids struggle with transitions. This can be during the day or at bedtime. Particularly if they are doing an activity that they enjoy or are focused on.

For these children timers can work really nicely. It’s a great visual representation of the time they have left.

We started using timers with O when he was 2, and we still sometimes have to use them (and he is 6!).

If he is really engaged on a task and he doesn’t want to go to bed then we will use a timer. I will always empathize with him but hold my boundary. So I will calmly say “Oh you are really enjoying playing Lego right now, but it is almost time for bed. So when this timer is up then we are going to go”.

He might not be happy but sticking to my boundary is so important. This helps children to feel safe and secure, they need these boundaries in place.

If you’re still having trouble getting them to bed, make the transition fun. So ask if they want to hop like a bunny or fly like a bird to bed.

Our older children will test us (it’s their job!) and it’s our job to hold our boundaries when they do!

Sickness.

It is definitely sickness season. Many of my clients and my own boys have been unwell with nasty coughs and colds.

In my experience babies that usually sleep well are not affected as much by minor sickness. Especially if they don’t rely on a parent to get to sleep.

Things I do with my toddler and recommendations I give to my clients when they are unwell:

💤 Let your child nap longer in the day than usual.

💤 Follow their cues rather than the clock, they might be more tired and need an earlier nap/bedtime than usual.

💤 Give them more comfort if needed at bedtime and during the night. If you can I would still let them fall asleep in their own bed, maybe just stay with them and offer comfort if they are upset or uncomfortable.

💤 If they wake during the night, go straight to them to check them.

💤 If you are worried about them and don’t want to leave them, I always recommend moving into their room to sleep rather than bring them into your bed. This can be a tough habit to break once the sickness is over.

💤 You may need to offer a drink in the night whilst they are unwell.

💤 Use a saline nose spray and aspirator several times a day and particularly before sleep.

💤 Take your child into a steamy bathroom before bed to help clear out their stuffy nose.

💤 Rub a bit of coconut oil around a sore nose.

💤 Use a baby vapour rub on their chest.

💤 It is really important NOT to elevate their mattress when they have a cough, as this is not a safe way for them to sleep.

Make sure the SAVE this post for the next time your little one is unwell.
