CNN has published an article about the growing number of Americans abroad considering renouncing U.S. citizenship.

Daan Durlacher, co-founder of Americans Overseas, was interviewed about what we see every day: for many U.S. citizens abroad, this is not mainly about politics. It is about U.S. tax filing, FATCA, banking restrictions and the administrative burden of being treated as a U.S. person.

Renunciation is a serious legal and tax decision. Before taking any steps, it is important to understand your U.S. tax position first.

At first glance, the Tiësto case looks like celebrity tax news.

But the real lesson is much broader.

The case shows how expensive bad cross-border tax advice can become when more than one tax system is involved. According to the Amsterdam Court of Appeal, faulty advice around U.S. tax residency and filing had major financial consequences.

That is not just relevant for high-profile performers. It also matters for Americans abroad, green card holders, entrepreneurs, and expats with investments, crypto, pensions, or other cross-border complexity.

Once your life spans more than one tax system, assumptions can become costly.

A major change for Americans abroad: the U.S. renunciation fee is being reduced.

The fee for renouncing U.S. citizenship will drop from $2,350 to $450, effective April 13, 2026.

For many Americans abroad, this removes a significant financial barrier. At the same time, the process itself will still depend on local U.S. embassies and consulates, where waiting times, appointment availability, and procedures can vary considerably.

George Clooney’s French citizenship made headlines. But beyond the celebrity news is a question many Americans abroad quietly ask:

Does U.S. citizenship still make sense when your life is built elsewhere?

While Clooney has not renounced his U.S. citizenship, his situation reflects real issues expats face—IRS filings, FBAR obligations, complex tax rules, and, for some, the U.S. exit tax.
