A carbon budget is the maximum amount of CO₂ we can emit globally to keep global warming to a maximum of 2.0 °C , with an aim for 1.5 °C. At the current pace, we’re on track to exhaust the CO₂ budget for the built environment far too quickly. This calls for urgent and innovative action to change how we build while staying within planetary boundaries.

Did you know there are 30 impact-driven ventures across Europe transforming how industries approach circular value chains? 💡

As part of SoTecIn, these ventures are using higher R circular strategies to truly maximize the highest possible value of materials at each point in a product’s lifecycle, while using the latest technologies, innovative business models, and steward ownership structures to maximize societal impact.

In Phase 1 of , we worked with 50 tech ventures in the food, textile, and plastic & packaging sectors to boost their systemic impact by focusing on:

✅ Alternative governance models
✅ Impact strategy development
✅ Using intellectual property for scaling impact

30 of these ventures have now progressed to Phase 2, where they will:

🔧 Build tech demos and pilot projects
🤝 Collaborate with industry to validate solutions
💡 Showcase market potential and systemic impact

A decade of impact with Circulair Friesland —see how we are helping the region go circular. 👇

Almost ten years ago, the Province of Friesland approached us for help in shaping the new circular economy. By mapping the regional context and conducting in-depth interviews with local entrepreneurs, we identified circular opportunities that evolved into landmark projects.

Now, we are excited to announce the start of a new collaboration!

Over the next two years, Metabolic will closely support the previously identified impact projects with specialized expertise to scale circular practices and strengthen collective impact. This collaboration is part of the Nationale Groeifondsprogramma Toekomstbestendige Leefomgeving, demonstrating that sustainable construction is not only necessary but feasible.

Just last week, municipal project teams, guided by our experts Tenesha Caton, Merlijn Blok, and Reinout Haisma, gathered for an inspiring session to align their ambitions for the region and establish a baseline for creating concrete frameworks to make bio-based and circular buildings a reality. 🏡

This initiative will continue to grow until the end of 2026, creating a blueprint for what circular, resilient area developments can look like.

Buildings account for 34% of global energy use and 37% of CO₂ emissions (UNEP). Construction holds the key to a circular future—but too many resources are wasted. 🌍

The province of South Holland () is setting a powerful example. By 2030, it aims for a fully circular economy through rethinking resource use, minimizing waste, and innovating material reuse. 💡

Using urban mining scans, we analyzed how materials flow during construction and demolition. The results? A roadmap for reusing materials to reduce emissions and create circular supply chains.

In 2022, buildings consumed 34% of global energy and accounted for 37% of CO₂ emissions (UNEP). These numbers make it clear that construction is key to a circular future, yet too many resources are wasted.

The Provincie Zuid-Holland is leading by example. By 2030, it aims to transform its economy into a sustainable and circular one. This involves rethinking resource use, minimizing waste, and innovating to reuse materials.

Through an urban mining scan, we analyzed how building materials flow across construction, renovation, and demolition. Our findings highlight the potential of urban mining to unlock the value of materials already in the region.

Here is how we did it:

1️⃣ Analyzed the flow of construction and demolition materials through 2030.
2️⃣ Mapped where materials are needed and where they become available.
3️⃣ Quantified how reusing materials in key activities can reduce emissions.

These insights equip South Holland with a clear roadmap: build infrastructure for material reuse, establish circular supply chains, and adopt procurement practices that prioritize reclaimed materials. Provincial and national collaboration is key to scaling urban mining and accelerating the transition to a circular building economy.

EU aims to remove 310 million tons of CO2 by 2030 through land-based actions. Here’s how LandShift will help.

Funded by the EU Horizon program, LandShift aims to empower five rural pilot regions— 🇫🇷 France, 🇬🇷 Greece, 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇵🇱 Poland, and 🇺🇦 Ukraine—to deploy nature-based solutions and implement sustainable land-use strategies.

Metabolic Institute will develop an 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆, analyzing local land-use trade-offs, and co-creating strategies with rural communities to accelerate their transition to sustainable land management systems.

By providing stakeholders with tools to balance biodiversity, food production, and climate needs, LandShift is setting a new benchmark for integrating ecological integrity with human development, fostering thriving, resilient communities.

Something exciting happened last week in Copenhagen: we just launched TIMBERHAUS! 🇪🇺💡

The construction sector drives 40% of Europe’s carbon emissions, urgently needing sustainable alternatives.

Funded by the EU Horizon program, TIMBERHAUS will contribute to Europe’s climate policy targets by developing innovative, circular solutions for sustainable wood construction.

We’re excited to share that our Institute’s Bioeconomy team will lead the work focused on assessing the boundaries of the sustainable supply of timber for the EU construction sectors and building new methodologies to quantify the carbon benefits of timber products.

The final results?
➜ A new carbon quantification methodology to support the EU Carbon Farming Framework
➜ Blueprints emphasizing circularity, health, and well-being, honoring local cultural design traditions
➜ The first European Wood Observatory to provide an open-access platform promoting sustainable wood use
➜ Policy toolkits to guide EU and local governments in embedding climate-smart wood practices into regulatory frameworks
