We welcome architects Polina and Leonardo at Space&Matter!

We are happy to welcome our new junior architect Polina to our team at Space&Matter!
Polina recently graduated from Aalto University with a Master’s degree in Architecture. In her work, she is particularly interested in different aspects of sustainability and exploring the connection between architecture and nature.

When asked about her first impressions and expectations, Polina answered:
“One of the things I really enjoy about working here is the collaborative approach to projects. Our Monday meetings are a great example of this. Coming together to share how different projects are progressing creates a sense of transparency and makes it possible to learn from each other. I’m happy to bring my own knowledge and perspective to the collective and continue learning from the people around me!”

We are excited to welcome another new architect Leonardo to our team at Space&Matter!
Leonardo studied at the School of Architecture of Florence. He moved to the Netherlands in 2020 to work as an architect and a furniture and objects designer and maker. Leonardo enjoys working across different scales, from architecture to gardens to furniture and lighting, exploring how ideas can be developed through building and making. This has shaped his sensitivity to materials, detail, and the process of bringing ideas into reality.

When asked about his aspirations, Leonardo answered:
“I look forward to working on architecture that can meaningfully shape the environment of our cities, enriching the everyday experience of the communities that inhabit them.”

LeeuwenDeel’s construction is progressing and the Aberson S-brick panels are being hung on their timber substructure. It is our first project that uses the S-brick system, relatively new method in the building industry. The ceramic brick slips are glued to a panel, and mechanically secured with stainless steel wires.

The biggest wooden student housing block in Europe.

In the Cruquius area of Amsterdam’s Oostelijk Havengebied, Space&Matter designs a new student housing block for Deelgebied 11. The site sits within a former industrial harbour area that is being transformed into a mixed residential district. The building provides 274 student studios.

The collective life in the building is organized across a sequence of shared spaces. A collective gallery runs through the building as a place for students to meet and chill, while an inner street on the ground floor gathers the shared amenities and forms the building’s everyday circulation route. At the heart of the block, a collective inner garden and patio offer a green counterpoint to the compact individual studios, giving residents a shared outdoor space of their own.

The building has a cross laminated timber modular structure, with each studio conceived as a repeatable timber unit. This modular clarity carries through to the building’s exterior: the outspoken facade is composed of colorful, standardized grid panels. In their rhythm and materiality, these panels reference the industrial heritage of the Cruquius area.

Great news!

The building permit has been granted for the plot on the corner of Klaprozenweg and Papaverweg in Amsterdam-Noord. A mixed-rent residential building will arise on the plot, designed to serve as a marker within the post-industrial area.

The building’s material palette, including wasted-based bricks, steel contour plates (a residual product of the metal industry), and standardized perforated corrugated sheets, references the informal, layered aesthetic of industrial Buiksloterham.

Site preparation for construction will begin in summer 2026, with completion of the building expected in late 2028.

We are happy to welcome Bowen to our team at Space&Matter!

Bowen is pursuing a Master of Architecture I at Yale University. Coming from a background in product and experience design, she is interested in practices that approach the built environment through a human-centered, collaborative, and systems-oriented lens.

Bowen shared with us: “On my first day at Space&Matter, I joined the team for a shared lunch, part of the office’s rotating cooking tradition. The spirit of openness, generosity, and inclusivity feels embedded not only in the projects, but also in the everyday culture of the team. I’m looking forward to learning from and contributing to Space&Matter’s multidisciplinary approach to circular, community-centered placemaking.”
