Jens Risom, a Danish-born pioneer, brought Scandinavian design principles to prominence in the United States during his tenure at Knoll Inc. His emphasis on simplicity, elegance, and craftsmanship defined an era of modernist furniture. By the 1960s, Risom was a leading designer under his own name, renowned for his serene and timeless creations, including his personally designed home in Block Island, Rhode Island.
Risom’s influence on American design is profound; he is widely regarded as the catalyst for popularizing Scandinavian aesthetics across the country, forever altering American home decor. His career spanned from the mid-1930s to 2009, producing iconic pieces like the Risom Rocker. Recently, at the age of 99, he collaborated on the Ven Storage Collection with Chris Hardy, underscoring his enduring impact.
Educated at Niels Brock Copenhagen Business College and The School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen alongside design luminaries like Hans J. Wegner and Børge Mogensen, Risom immigrated to New York in 1939. His early success with Hans Knoll led him to establish Jens Risom Design Inc., which grew into one of America’s top furniture companies with a global reach.
Today, Risom’s designs continue to inspire through brands like Stellar Works, which preserves his legacy by producing reinterpretations of his classic works, ensuring his influence endures in the world of design.
