This incident exposes a sickening reality. How detached from humanity do you have to be to ignore seafarers fighting for their lives after an international distress signal?

Is a crew legally obligated to monitor VHF Channel 16 while at anchor? Yes. Is the pathetic excuse that a tiny, stranded boat represents a "terrorist threat" justified? Absolutely not.

Let’s break down the cold, hard facts:

The Value of Life: Human life has no price tag. Period.

The Law: Maintaining a listening watch on Channel 16 is mandatory at all times. No exceptions. Even at anchor.

The Excuse: You cannot ignore a distress call unless rendering aid actively destroys your own ship.

Picture this: What if Mark Zuckerberg himself was floundering in the ice-cold, unforgiving waters of Alaska?

Would it be acceptable for vessels to just sail on by because another arrogant superyacht captain thinks they are above international maritime law?

We just witnessed the horrific tragedy of the Bayesian, where Mike Lynch and others lost their lives. The survivors were only saved because a fellow yacht captain actually did his job and rushed to the rescue.

Do these billionaire superyacht owners and their captains look down on smaller, "insignificant" boats? It certainly looks like it. They treat the ocean like their private playground, forgetting that the sea treats everyone equally.

They look down on the little guy, until their own multi-million dollar palace starts sinking, and they have to beg an honest skipper in a tiny fishing boat to pull them out of the water.

The Coast Guard is investigating the Launchpad, but the excuses already stink. "We were on the wrong VHF channel." Give me a break.

Every seasoned captain, military veteran, and pilot knows the oldest, dirtiest trick in the book: pretending your radio failed so you can ignore a direct order or an inconvenient cry for help.

Breaking news, Mark Zuckerberg's captain refuses to respond on a distress signal!

JUNEAU- The response of the crew of Mark Zuckerberg's superyacht to a distress call from a stranded boat in Alaska raises questions. A more distant cruise ship eventually came to the rescue. According to a spokesperson, Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan were not on board.

The 6.4-meter-long boat had run out of fuel between Petersburg and Juneau last week. The Launchpad, Zuckerberg's 118-meter superyacht with an estimated value of $300 million, would have been closer to the craft than the cruise ship Wilderness Legacy.

A passenger of that smaller cruise ship writes on Bluesky that the US Coast Guard had first contacted Zuckerberg's yacht. "Our vessel rescued a stranded vessel last night, after the Coast Guard apparently called Mark Zuckerberg's yacht, which was closer, but repeatedly refused to respond."

According to the passenger, the passengers of the Wilderness Legacy reacted almost unanimously with anger when the captain told the story.

Brian Baker, a spokesman for Zuckerberg and Chan, disputes that the crew deliberately refused to help. According to him, the couple was not present and the crew of the Launchpad used a different radio channel. "The relief efforts were already busy" when they listened to the call, he told Forbes.

Zuckerberg is the CEO of Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. He has previously been criticized for the social consequences of his social media, his rapprochement with Donald Trump and his luxurious, shielded lifestyle.
