New publication! A joint chapter wrote with Malcom Ferdinand called 'Facing the Ecological Crisis in the Caribbean', published in the beautiful book:

'Caribbean cultural heritage and the nation: Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao in a regional context' edited by Alex Van Stipriaan Luïscius , Luc Alofs, & Francio Guadeloupe

The complete book is open access available through the University of Leiden Scholarly Repository: https://scholarlypublications.universiteitleiden.nl/access/item%3A3629951/view

The editors kindly and beautifully summarised our chapter:
In “Facing the Ecological Crisis in the Caribbean,” Stacey Mac Donald and Malcom Ferdinand discuss the global ecological crisis as it manifests itself in the Dutch and French Caribbean. Colonisation, slavery, imperialism, and disaster capitalism have been the conditions for the destruction of Caribbean environments. While the region contributes little to global warming, it is at the forefront of its consequences: rising sea levels, high category hurricanes, and ocean acidification. The ecological crisis impacts biodiversity, food sovereignty, energy production, and cultural and natural heritage preservation. The authors consider the “double divide of modernity”: the environmental divide (man/nature) and the colonial divide (coloniser/colonised). This double divide has led to a tension between ecological and cultural heritage preservation.

After many years of hard work, Stacey successfully defended het Phd dissertation "'Life in Paradise': A Social Psychological, and Anthropological Study of Nature Conservation in the Caribbean Netherlands" on the 17th of May.

Her dissertation examines the efforts and motives of conservation actors on Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius, and situates these actors within the larger context of the Caribbean Netherlands. The main research question addressed is: How are the efforts of conservation actors to protect the environment of the Caribbean Netherlands affected by the recent social and political changes and their (post) colonial context? To get at these issues, this dissertation combines insights and approaches from environmental psychology, anthropology, and Caribbean studies to investigate how and why residents of the Caribbean Netherlands engage in conservation actions.

A summary of her research can be read here: https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/news/2022/05/life-in-paradise

Preserve, conserve, restore. Are the the same or are they different? 🤔 You guessed it, they are different! Read on to learn what these concepts entail when it comes to nature:
Preserve means that nature areas are ‘not managed’ or simply being kept as is. The idea is basically that we don’t mess with natural areas that don’t require our meddling. Preservation occurs when we constantly take environmental needs into account and remain respectful to the environment we so desperately rely on. 💚
Conserve or Conservation does entail a form of management. Namely, taking measures to keep any ecosystem in a good state of health and, thus, preventing detrimental loss or degradation of that ecosystem from occurring.🌺
Lastly, Restoration refers to the measures and interventions made to restore degraded ecosystem in order to bring them back to good health. Restoration is therefore a last, but often necessary, resort when it comes to nature management and Nature Based Solutions. 🌳

NBS - Reforestation. Money might not grow on trees, but food does! And we all know we can’t eat money, but we can eat food (duh). Another perk of reforestation as a Nature Based Solution: not only do you strengthen the local ecosystem, prevent erosion and create an allover better climate and environment for both people and animals to thrive, it helps to grow food for people and animals to consume.
Especially on islands where so much of the fresh produce is imported, reforestation contributes to the availability of fresh local produce. Both directly and indirectly as forestry helps improve the quality of the soil which ultimately benefits all agricultural practices. What are you waiting for? Go plant some trees!
