Frugal is the new chic.
Mia McGrath, a UK-based creator with roots in luxury fashion, shows us what that looks like today.

Mia reframes frugality as taste, where staying on top of your finances and knowing where to find great bargains, is the new status signal.

On TikTok, she shows that living well isn’t about owning more, but choosing better.
Thrifting over impulse buys, creatively reusing what you already have (yes, turning candle holders into vases is cool), and prioritising quality over quantity.

Frugal Chic emerges as a countermovement to excess and instant gratification. It champions under-consumption, mindful choice, and the freedom that comes from needing less.

This manifestation is part of a trend we call smartsumption, whereby we see a shift from consuming less to consuming smarter, better and more sustainable.

Curious how mindsets like Frugal Chic are shaping consumer behavior?
Let’s explore.

ANTICIPATE:  INFLATABLE KNIT

Textiles have always lived in the background.
Jeanne Mora flips that logic:
What if the fabric became the structure?

Inflatable Knit is a seat built only from fabric + air.
Stitch patterns act like circuits, guiding pressure so softness can stand.

It taps into a mindset we’re watching closely:
People want more than function - they want objects that lift moods, spark curiosity, and do more with less. Inflatable Knit turns that shift into something you can sit, hug or just admire and smile.

ANTICIPATE:  Daan Walder - Stoorzenders

Daan Walder designs in the noise, where signals glitch, memories overlap, and cities speak in fragments.

His work Stoorzenders is a roaming constellation of antennas broadcasting sound, light and video into public space; not polished, but intentionally unclear.
You don’t watch it. You navigate & feel it.
At its core, Daan urges us to hear what the city has forgotten - the marginalized voices that once shaped those spaces, now buried beneath convenience and flow.

As we move beyond neatly labelled experiences, Stoorzenders leaves room for interpretation, confusion and connection. It asks us to tune in differently and listen to what’s rarely given the mic.

During the Tank x Mare presentation, one designer cut through a sea of sameness with refreshing originality.
It reflects a clear shift in digital design: we’re moving away from the perfectly efficient and optimised, and leaning into the weird, the wonky, and the wonderful.

Signal of the Week: Shira Arzi
metric.ply - Turning digital “errors” into new forms

metric.ply is a digital tool that plays with 3D point clouds, stretching, thickening and reshaping them to create entirely new sculptural forms from one single model.
Here, data becomes material. A glitch becomes an idea. A distortion becomes design.

Shira flips digital compression on its head, turning what we usually see as “loss” into a creative engine that sparks new shapes and new ways of seeing.

We’re seeing a real shift:
from efficiency → to awe.
Instead of perfection, designers are embracing the irregular, the imperfect and the pleasantly strange, finding inspiration in the moments where data bends and misbehaves.

Want to understand the mindsets shaping the future of design and culture? Contact MARE to explore how these shifts can guide your next move.

Lengths of leftover fabric submerged with algae and fungi, draped over bowed copper. With these sculptures, Rosa Tharrats explores a symbiosis between the mineral, the vegetable and the industrial.

The artist “takes refuge in the fundamental impermanence of all phenomena...”

Like many contemporary artists today, is inspired by post-humanist philosopher Donna Haraway. And questions the boundaries between what is human and non-human, natural and technical, spiritual and rational, static and kinetic.

“…in the embrace of refuge, ecosystems find the space to heal.”

Rosa Tharrats envisions a symbiotic relationship between ‘the natural’ and ‘the industrial’. A trend we at MARE dubbed ‘Symbiotic Solutions’.

The exhibition Refugia was recently spotted at Barcelona by our Juultje Dehing.

Apple recently announced new accessibility features, coming later this year.

Part of the features is ‘Eye Tracking’, as a way for users with physical disabilities to control iPad or iPhone with their eyes. Additionally, ‘Music Haptics’ will offer a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music using the ‘Taptic Engine’.

Other features are ‘Vocal Shortcuts’, ‘Vehicle Motion Cues’ and a ‘Listen for Atypical Speech’ e.g.. All are designed to make the Apple-tech more accessible, for everyone, even the ‘atypical’.

With this, Apple acknowledges the inherent diversity of human beings, and therefore goes, what we call; ‘Beyond the Norm’. All the while blurring the lines between the digital and the physical, a trend we at MARE dubbed ‘Phygital Blurring’.

Still, with Data mining and mass-manipulation in an ominous entanglement, ‘EyeTracking’- tech raises an important question: where does this lead to, and who is really in control (t)here?

Where does technology end, and humans, or even nature, begin? Is there still a divide in this age of ‘phygital blurring’, where the digital and the physical are increasingly intertwined? Was there ever…?

This year’s theme of , ‘Outer/Body’, will explore and question the boundaries and connections between bodies, minds, living environments, and technology.

FIBER Festival is an exploration of audiovisual art, digital culture, experimental music and daring conversations in relation to technological developments and societal issues.

FIBER will take place form May 29 to June 2, across various locations throughout Amsterdam.
