For more than a year, there has been a rising trend in using diabetes drugs such as Ozempic solely for its weight loss effect. As with any medication, there are potential risks of side effects that you may or may not have been aware of initially.🧐

For instance, in 2023, American Jaclyn Bjorklund launched legal proceedings against Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly and Co, the manufacturers of Ozempic and Mounjaro respectively, alleging severe gastrointestinal complications, particularly gastroparesis characterised by a paralysis of the stomach.🥺

The personal injury law firm that filed the lawsuit argued that these diabetes medications, which gained popularity for assisting in weight loss, did not disclose the particular complication experienced by Bjorklund to medical professionals.🙏

Although Ozempic can be effective for weight loss, its use is not without risks to health, with new side effects continuing to surface. As increasing numbers of individuals achieve their desired weight loss outcomes, they are also observing notable changes in their physical appearance, leading to the emergence of terms like «Ozempic face» and «Ozempic breasts».

Inconsistencies and contradictory data privacy policies were found in several popular female health apps.📱

From Clue and Flo to Premom and Stardust, there are many popular applications women use to monitor their health by tracking information such as their periods, ovulation cycles, and sexual activity.

But are female health apps protecting this sensitive data?
A team of researchers in the UK found «problematic practices, including inconsistencies» regarding data privacy in several female health apps.🤔

They found that 35 per cent of the apps had contradicting policies regarding whether they were sharing personal data with third parties. They also found that user data could be accessed by law enforcement or authorities in many cases.✍🏻

The shortcomings identified in the apps’ designs included non-essential data processing often enabled by default, unclear or complex opt-out mechanisms, as well as privacy control screens which were often only accessible through unintuitive interactions.✨

While artificial intelligence (AI) voice cloning has caused concern, the use of OpenAI’s new tech could help people affected by strokes and tumours.🧠

Before undergoing what would be a lifesaving and life-changing surgery, the voice of young American Alexis «Lexi» Bogan was exuberant. In August last year, doctors removed a tumour lodged near the back of her brain. When the breathing tube came out a month later, Bogan had trouble swallowing and strained to say «hi» to her parents.🙏

Months of rehabilitation aided her recovery, but her speech is still impaired. Friends, strangers and her own family members struggle to understand what she is trying to tell them.

In April, the 21-year-old got her old voice back. Not the real one, but a voice clone generated by artificial intelligence (AI) tech from ChatGPT maker OpenAI that she can summon from a phone app.📱

Bogan is one of the first people - the only one with her condition - who have been able to recreate a lost voice with OpenAI’s new Voice Engine.🌟

«We’re hoping Lexi’s a trailblazer as the technology develops,» said Dr. Rohaid Ali, a neurosurgery resident at Brown University’s medical school and Rhode Island Hospital. Millions of people with debilitating strokes, throat cancer, or neurogenerative diseases could benefit, he said.😉

Its developers say it’s the first device which doesn’t need to be implanted into the patient.🏥

A new device may help patients who have lost movement in their hands and arms gain that function again. Other trials aiming to help spinal cord injury patients using electrical stimulation required devices implanted into the patient’s body.😉

The new ARC-EX device invented by researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the University of Washington, can be worn externally and was part of a trial involving 65 patients in the US and one in Scotland.

With electrodes placed near the cervical spinal cord on the neck, the device is designed to send a powerful electrical current to the spinal cord to restore arm and hand function.👋🏻

Melanie Reid, a journalist in the UK who took part in a clinical trial of the device, was paralysed after falling from a horse 14 years ago. After using the ARC-EX device for several months, she reports more strength and mobility in her left hand. The electrical current given to the patients was five times stronger than would normally be given in treatment.🧑‍⚕️

Austria was the top country in Europe for women’s health, ranking third on a global index, according to a new report. The country initiated an action plan with 40 measures specifically for women’s health in 2017.🇦🇹

Germany, Denmark, Poland, and the Czech Republic were the other EU countries among the top 10 in the world on women’s health.🩺

This is the third year that the company Hologic published the Women’s Health Index, a survey conducted with more than 147,000 participants from 143 countries and territories. The data was gathered in 2022 and analysed in 2023. The index takes into consideration criteria such as access to healthcare, emotional health, and food security.👌🏻

Women in the UK reported feeling sadder, angrier and more stressed compared to women in the EU, the survey found. According to the data, 32% of British women reported feeling sad, compared with 26% of women in the EU. Some 39% felt stressed the day prior, while it was 34% for those from the EU.🌎

The UK ranked 37th out of the 143 countries included in the index.🇬🇧

Cases of dengue - which is transmitted through bites by infected mosquitos - are expected to rise globally due to climate change.🦟

A new vaccine against dengue has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) as over 6 million cases of the mosquito-borne virus have been reported in the Americas so far this year.🦠

Dengue is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can cause flu-like symptoms and in rare cases lead to death. The vaccine was developed by Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda and contains weakened versions of the four serotypes of dengue virus.💉

The global health agency recommended the vaccine for children aged six to 16 years old in areas where there are high levels of the virus. Two doses of the jab are given three months apart.

Dr Rogerio Gaspar, WHO’s Director for Regulation and Prequalification, said the approval “is an important step in the expansion of global access to dengue vaccines”.🙌🏻

“With only two dengue vaccines to date prequalified approved, we look forward to more vaccine developers coming forward for assessment, so that we can ensure vaccines reach all communities who need it,” Gaspar added in a statement.

Patients treated by female doctors have a lower mortality rate when compared to patients treated by their male counterparts, a new study suggests. Researchers found this was especially true for female patients and observed a similar pattern for hospital readmission rates.🏥

Researchers looked at data from over 776,000 male and female patients aged 65 years or older and treated between 2016 and 2019. They analysed patient mortality and readmission 30 days after hospital admission.

When treated by a female doctor, female patients had a mortality rate of 8.15% compared to an 8.38% rate when a male doctor treated them.👨‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️

While a «large and clinically meaningful» difference was observed for female patients, the authors noted, «for male patients, an important difference between female and male physicians could be ruled out».

A similar pattern was observed for hospital readmission with women having a 15.51% rate when treated by a female doctor and a 16.01% when the physician was a man.🧐

The weight-loss drug semaglutide - commonly sold under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy - reduced cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack in adults with preexisting disease independent of weight loss. It also helped people keep their weight down for at least four years.🌟

Semaglutide is the main active ingredient in the popular weight-loss jabs Ozempic and Wegovy. It mimics the GLP-1 hormone which can signal that your body is full.💪🏻

The analyses looked at the SELECT trial, which included more than 17,600 adults from 41 countries between October 2018 and March 2021 with pre-existing cardiovascular disease and who were overweight or obese.

Patients from «a geographically and racially diverse population» took semaglutide or a placebo once weekly for a mean of 3.3 years during the trial. The trial found a 20 per cent reduction in «major adverse cardiovascular events,» such as stroke, heart attack, and cardiovascular death.🙏

25/05/2024

As an increasing number of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms promise to improve accuracy and speed up the work of radiologists, some have wondered if the programmes will replace these doctors or ease their workload.🌐

The first large, rigorous studies testing AI-assisted radiologists against those working alone give hints at the potential improvements.

Initial results from a Swedish study of 80,000 women showed that AI-supported breast screening detected 20% more cancers compared to two radiologists. Using AI instead of a second reviewer decreased the human workload by 44%, according to the study.🌟

Still, the study’s lead author says it’s essential that a radiologist make the final diagnosis in all cases. If an automated algorithm misses a cancer, «that’s going to be very negative for trust in the caregiver,” said Dr Kristina Lang of Lund University.

The question of who could be held liable in such cases is among the thorny legal issues that have yet to be resolved.🧐

One result is that radiologists are likely to continue double-checking all AI determinations, lest they be held responsible for an error. That’s likely to wipe out many of the predicted benefits, including reduced workload and burnout.😉

Researchers say the app could be used to detect early signs of dementia in younger people as well as monitor the effects of treatment.📱

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in the US found that remotely deployed smartphone tests could help to detect frontotemporal dementia in people who are genetically predisposed to it before symptoms start.👌🏻

Researchers partnered with a software company Datacubed Health to make the tests that looked at executive functioning, such as planning or organising, and controlling impulses, as the part of the brain that controls executive functioning can atrophy as the disease progresses. The data collected included voice recordings as well as walking, balance, and language tests.🙌🏻

The app was tested between 2019 and 2023 with 360 participants, 209 women and 151 men. The mean age of those who participated was 54. Many were genetically predisposed to get the disease but had not yet developed symptoms.

The scientists found that the smartphone tests accurately identified individuals with dementia and were «more sensitive to early symptoms» than a common clinical cognitive test.🌟

New AI tools are helping doctors communicate with their patients, some by answering messages and others by taking notes during exams. It’s been almost 18 months since OpenAI released ChatGPT. Already thousands of doctors are using similar products based on large language models. One company says its tool works in 14 languages.🌍

AI saves doctors time and prevents burnout, enthusiasts say. It also shakes up the doctor-patient relationship, raising questions of trust, transparency, privacy and the future of human connection.👩🏼‍💻

Your next check-up could be recorded by an AI-powered smartphone app that listens, documents and instantly organises everything into a note you can read later. The tool also can mean more money for the doctor’s employer because it won’t forget details that legitimately could be billed to insurance.

Other AI tools could be helping your doctor draft a message, but you might never know it.😉

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) says lowering the age recommendation from 50 to 40 could make a difference as more and more women in their 40s are being diagnosed with breast cancer.🙏

According to data from the National Cancer Institute, the rates of breast cancer for women in their 40s have increased by 2% annually since 2015.🧐

Researchers say the new guideline will also help to address another huge disparity in breast cancer treatment, the fact that the cancer death rate is 40% higher among Black women who develop aggressive forms of the disease younger.

Breast cancer is also one of the most common forms of cancer and a leading cause of female mortality in the EU. In 2022, breast cancer was the most diagnosed cancer in the EU, with an estimated 380,000 cases.

The European Commission lowered the age recommendations for mammography screenings from 50 to 45 in 2023. But women aged between 40 and 44 who don’t have symptoms are not included.👌🏻
