Future Leaders Platform Building the Future of Hospitality and Tourism, Today, with our six flagship initiatives!

20/10/2026

What does the future of Zimbabwean cuisine look like? Yesterday, vocational students brought their ideas to the table. 🇿🇼

At the first Craft & Culture Challenge Zimbabwe, hosted at the University of Zimbabwe, they shared dishes and stories rooted in their culinary heritage.

Chefs and school directors explored a question that matters beyond the kitchen: how can culinary education better prepare young people for the industry?

This is workforce development in practice: students showcasing their skills, educators exchanging ideas and industry contributing its expertise.

Through the Craft & Culture Challenge, Future Leaders Platform brings these people together to help shape what comes next.

To the students, educators, chefs and partners who made this first edition possible: thank you. What a beginning.

The next generation has talent. How will today’s industry leaders help them use it?

For Devota Mdachi, Director and Consultant at Africa Tourism Partners, supporting young people means sharing the experience you’ve spent your career building.

With over 33 years of experience at the Tanzania Tourist Board and the National College of Tourism, she serves on the Future Leaders Challenge Eastern Africa Strategic Board and sends a clear message to fellow professionals: this initiative needs your support.

Ahead of this October’s Eastern Africa edition, we’re revisiting her perspective on what students gain when industry professionals get involved, and why she chooses to contribute.

Swipe through to see why Devota is backing the Future Leaders Challenge to develop Eastern Africa’s future industry leaders—and why she’s calling on others to get involved.

🇿🇼 Three days. Three initiatives. One shared ambition for Zimbabwe.

From 19 to 21 October, the Future Leaders Platform will bring industry, education, government and future talent together at the University of Zimbabwe Innovation Hub to strengthen the country’s hospitality and tourism workforce.

Two of the platform’s flagship initiatives, the Future Leaders Challenge and School Directors Alliance, will return to Zimbabwe. This year, they will be joined by the Craft & Culture Challenge, taking place in the country for the first time.

Together, the three initiatives will develop future talent, celebrate Zimbabwe’s culinary and cultural heritage, strengthen collaboration between education and industry, and create direct pathways to professional opportunity.

Thank you to the University of Zimbabwe, our Zimbabwe Strategic Board and all our partners for helping build this growing national talent ecosystem.

Zimbabwe has the talent, heritage and ambition. We cannot wait to bring everyone together in Harare.

11 countries. 30 institutions. Our biggest Eastern Africa edition yet!

The hospitality and tourism sector’s next chapter depends on the connections we build today.

On 26 and 27 October, the Future Leaders Platform brings industry, education, government and future talent together at Strathmore University in Nairobi around a shared ambition: connecting talent development with the opportunities and needs of the sector.

Through the School Directors Alliance Summit and the Future Leaders Challenge, leaders and emerging talent will work on both sides of that ambition: strengthening education and industry collaboration, and exploring more inclusive pathways into employment and entrepreneurship, particularly for women and persons with disabilities.

Held under the patronage of Hon. Rebecca Miano, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, this is our largest Eastern Africa gathering to date, bringing a growing regional talent ecosystem together to move the conversation forward.

Thank you to our Eastern Africa board members for your commitment to making it happen.

“Hospitality can change lives.”

That belief has shaped Verona Naidoo’s career.
Growing up in South Africa, she saw how employment, mentorship and access to opportunity could transform not only an individual’s future, but also the future of families and communities.

Today, as Vice President of People & Culture Operations at Accor, Verona remains inspired by seeing people grow in confidence, build meaningful careers and progress from entry-level roles into leadership.

In our latest Corporate Spotlight, she shares her perspective on developing future leaders, bringing education and industry closer together, and helping more women move from potential to visible, sustainable leadership through Accor’s programme.

Her advice?
“Be bold enough to take opportunities before you feel completely ready for them.”

Strong career pathways begin when education, industry and government plan for the future together.

The School Directors Alliance connects more than 170 hospitality and tourism institutions worldwide with industry and government.

Through dialogue around curriculum relevance, employability and changing workforce needs, the Alliance helps education respond to industry realities while creating stronger partnerships and pathways for students.

As part of the Future Leaders Platform talent ecosystem, it strengthens education-industry-government alignment and helps turn education into opportunity.

How do we prepare the next generation to lead hospitality and tourism?

By bringing the right people together ánd creating the space for future leaders to wake up, grow up and show up.

The Future Leaders Challenge is one of six connected initiatives within the Future Leaders Platform. It brings future talent, educators, industry, government and partners together to explore the challenges shaping our sector and strengthen the workforce ecosystem for the future.

At the heart of the FLC is the development of future leaders. The next generation is invited to explore the industry, develop an informed point of view and amplify their voices.

Through the Student Challenge, personal development, competition, exposure to industry leaders, networking and the Job Market Fair, students are challenged to learn, contribute and grow, while bringing fresh perspectives that can benefit the wider community.

At the same time, the FLC supports students and educators become more informed, confident and influential.

Because building a future-ready hospitality and tourism industry is not something one generation or one stakeholder can do alone.

We learn, grow and lead together.

In 2020, Hubert Ummels, co-founder of the Future Leaders Platform, saw the staffing company he had helped build across Europe reduced to almost nothing within eight days.

What followed was not simply a decision to rebuild. Hubert had to decide what was truly worth building next.

The answer connected back to his first hospitality job at 14, when a restaurant owner recognised his potential and gave him room to grow.

That experience showed him how one person’s belief and one opportunity can change someone’s direction.

Today, that lesson sits at the heart of the Future Leaders Platform and our work to create stronger pathways into skills, employment and entrepreneurship.

Gulf Magazine shares Hubert’s journey from his first opportunity in hospitality, through business growth and sudden loss, to the purpose driving FLP today.

🇿🇼 Zimbabwe, we’re building this together.

Talent is not the challenge. Creating the right connections, opportunities and pathways for young people is.

On 26 August, our Future Leaders Platform Zimbabwe Strategic Board came together at Hyatt Regency Harare to discuss how industry, education and government can work more closely together to develop the next generation of hospitality and tourism talent.

Our priorities are clear: more meaningful workplace exposure, better internships and mentoring, stronger connections to employers, and greater support for young people who want to build businesses of their own.

This commitment goes beyond October.

With the Future Leaders Challenge, Crafts & Culture Challenge and job market fair ahead, we are building an ecosystem that connects students, educators and employers—and creates opportunities that continue long after October.

Thank you to our Strategic Board, our partners and Zimbabwe Country Manager Luckson Zambuko for taking ownership of this journey with us.
Zimbabwe has the talent. Together, we need to create opportunities.
