What makes a country truly unique?

Its people.
Its stories.
Its traditions.
Its craftsmanship.
Its culture.

The Craft & Culture Challenge is created to help preserve, celebrate, and reimagine the cultural heritage that shapes a nation’s identity.

The initiative encourages young people not only to learn about their heritage but to become storytellers, ambassadors, innovators, and champions of their heritage.

As part of the Future Leaders Platform, a global initiative that connects education, industry, government, and future leaders, the Craft & Culture Challenge creates a space for collaboration, dialogue, and innovation on culture and heritage.

It brings together students, educators, industry leaders, tourism professionals, government stakeholders, and local communities to explore how culture can be preserved, celebrated, and shared with future generations.

Because preserving culture is not only about protecting the past. It is about creating a future where traditions, local knowledge, craftsmanship, and cultural experiences continue to inspire communities, strengthen tourism, and create new opportunities.

The Craft & Culture Challenge will take place on 22 June 2026 at the Ramses Hilton in Cairo, Egypt.

Join us as we celebrate the stories, traditions, and heritage that make every destination unique.

Future Leaders Platform Founder Hubert Ummels and Esther Munyiri, Country Manager East Africa, recently met with Hon. CS Rebecca Miano,EGH, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife and Patron of the Future Leaders Platform, to present a series of workforce development initiatives aimed at strengthening employment, entrepreneurship, and skills development opportunities for young people across Kenya.

During the meeting, Hubert Ummels and Esther Munyiri shared FLP’s vision to connect education, industry, and government through its six flagship initiatives. Hon. Rebecca Miano provided strategic guidance and discussed opportunities to engage key stakeholders and partners to help bring these initiatives to life.

Key areas discussed included the launch of an international employment and internship platform for Kenyan youth, the Future Leaders Challenge on 26–27 October in Kenya—bringing together 36 schools from 14 East African countries—and the expansion of the Future Founders Forum to support young entrepreneurs, particularly women and youth, across Kenya’s counties.

The meeting also explored ways to strengthen workforce readiness through industry-relevant training, education, and capacity-building programs that increase the transition from graduation to employment.

The Future Leaders Platform appreciates the continued support and patronage of Hon. Rebecca Miano as together we work to create opportunities, develop talent, and empower the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals across Kenya and Eastern Africa.

We are kicking off a new series: Meet the Team.

A closer look at the people behind Future Leaders Challenge, and the conversations, ideas and values that continue to shape this platform. During Future Leaders Challenge Morocco, our team sat down with our co-founder, Hubert Ummels, to reflect on what continues to drive this initiative forward.

For Hubert, it starts with one belief:
The next generation needs a voice.

Not in theory. In practice.
In the same room as industry leaders, educators, and government.

Because if they are the future of hospitality and tourism, they should help shape it.

But beyond that, success is measured in something simple.

Students leaving with confidence.
With clarity.
And with a sense that they matter.

That is where real change begins.

And it is also where the industry has an opportunity.

To listen more carefully.
To adapt.
And to create environments where young talent can grow, contribute, and stay.

Because building the future of this industry is not just about attracting talent.
It is about understanding them.

3RD EDITION DONE — AND WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED!

The 3rd edition of the Future Leaders Challenge South Africa has come to an end, but the momentum is only building…

Over the past two days, students stepped into real-world industry engagements where conversations moved beyond theory into practice, and ideas were tested and challenged in real time.

Students, industry, educational institutions, and government connected through thought-provoking questions, sparking meaningful interactions and genuine connections. Participants described this as an experience of a lifetime, shaped by authentic dialogue, real challenges, and meaningful exposure to the industry.

During the final student challenge presentations, one thing became very clear:
when pressure grows, and you practice under pressure, you build confidence.

And that is exactly what we saw on stage.

At the heart of this edition was a clear intention: community over competition.

And the impact is already starting to show:
• Early-stage conversations around job opportunities are beginning to materialise
• The School Directors Alliance Summit (SDA) bringing together 18 university leaders, committed to strengthening ongoing collaboration
• Schools demonstrated innovation, excellence, and strong presentation capability
• Energy, engagement, and commitment remained high throughout

A big congratulations to the winners of this year’s Student Challenge from CUT (Central University of Technology):
Mpumelelo Tsulo
Dieketseng Chantal Mothupi
Boitumelo Boitumelo
Naledi Modiri

A sincere thank you to our Strategic Board Members of the Future Leaders Challenge South Africa, your leadership, guidance, and commitment ensure that everything we do stays relevant, ambitious, and impactful.

And equally important: this would not be possible without our partners and all stakeholders involved. Your commitment is what makes this initiative real.

To every student who showed up with energy and purpose; thank you and remember; when pressure grows, and you practice under pressure, you build confidence 🫶🏻

School Directors Alliance formalises in year three, from initiative to institution

Three years ago, this didn’t exist.

No structure.
No alignment.
No collective voice across hospitality and tourism education in South Africa.

Just institutions, each tackling the same challenges in parallel.

Yesterday marked a shift.

What started as a bold idea under the Future Leaders Platform has now taken a decisive step forward.

The School Directors Alliance formally established how it will operate going forward.

17 university leaders came together to move beyond dialogue and commit to structure, ownership, and continuity.

What was agreed:

A formal governance structure
A representative board across public and private institutions
A signed Letter of Intent committing to six board engagements per year

This is where it becomes real.

Because transforming education is not about individual excellence.
It’s about collective alignment.

Aligning how institutions engage with industry
How talent is developed
And how future leaders are prepared for a changing sector

Strong leadership from Prof. Takalani Ramukumba (WSU) ensured this moment didn’t stay conceptual, but translated into action and accountability.

The School Directors Alliance is no longer just a platform for conversation.

It is becoming a coordinated force within the Future Leaders Platform ecosystem, connecting academia, industry, and leadership around one shared ambition:

to elevate the future of hospitality and tourism education.

POWERFUL START - FUTURE LEADERS CHALLENGE SOUTH AFRICA

A vibrant morning of the Future Leaders Challenge South Africa 2026 brought together students, industry leaders, school directors, and partners in a shared effort to strengthen the hospitality and tourism talent pipeline.

The focus is clear: building meaningful connections between education and industry, and creating real pathways into the world of work through dialogue, exposure, and collaboration.

In collaboration with our partners, the Future Leaders Challenge creates a dedicated space for students to take their first steps into industry by equipping them with practical tools, exposure, and real-world insights to support their career journey in hospitality and tourism.
Across a series of workshops and inspirational talks, industry leaders shared perspectives on skills, expectations, and pathways into the sector.

Good morning, Johannesburg!

There’s a distinct energy in the city today. 🇿🇦

The Future Leaders Challenge returns to South Africa for its third edition - bringing with it more than an event, but a community committed to building something that endures beyond these two days.

Here, hospitality and tourism are not merely industries, they are economic lifelines. They create opportunity, shape career pathways, and expand access for a new generation of talent.

Yet the transition into this future remains complex, fragmented, and often uncertain.
During the FLC live event at NH Johannesburg Sandton, students, educators, industry leaders, and government come together to challenge assumptions and bridge these divides.

Supported by the South African Department of Tourism and key industry partners, this platform moves beyond dialogue - it becomes a catalyst where engagement translates into alignment, and alignment into real opportunity creation across the sector.

That impact is not abstract - it is experienced here:
Where perspectives meet lived realities.
Where ideas are tested, not theorised.
Where connections evolve into tangible opportunities.
Where the next generation does not wait for the future, but actively shapes it.

Because the future of this industry will be shaped by those who choose to engage with it today.

To everyone contributing to this moment – welcome!

Johannesburg, we’re proud to be here. Let’s begin. 🇿🇦
