From the first SmartFlo conveyors installed in 2013 to approximately 13 kilometers once the latest expansion is complete. With another 4.5 kilometers currently being added, Joost Kalanchoë in Holambra, Brazil, continues to be one of the largest SmartFlo users worldwide.

During his recent trip to Brazil for Hortitec, Michael Meijler visited the new greenhouse to see the installation taking shape. SmartFlo will support efficient internal plant transport throughout the new facility, reducing manual handling and helping manage plant flows on a large scale.

What makes this project even more special? The SmartFlo conveyors installed over a decade ago are still running today. A great example of reliable, scalable automation that can grow alongside a greenhouse operation.

What happens after a plant is picked for an e-commerce order? At Spring Meadow Nursery, each plant is placed in a carrier, identified, and tracked throughout the automated shipping system. Smart routing and buffering ensure plants are sorted and brought together based on real-time orders before continuing to cleaning, packing, and shipping.

The result is one connected flow that reduces manual handling and labor dependency while creating the flexibility to process changing order volumes and support future growth. With a capacity of up to 2,000 plants per hour, the system is built to keep things moving, even during peak periods.

🔧 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗩𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗻
At Vlasman in Mijdrecht, a system optimisation project has successfully been completed. Working closely with the grower, WPS optimised several processes, including plant sorting, with one clear goal: creating an even more stable, reliable, and efficient operation.

A key part of the project was the expansion and modernisation of the vision system. A new sorting camera was added while the existing camera was upgraded, ensuring both assess plants in exactly the same way. This creates consistent and reliable sorting decisions, even when plants vary in size or shape.

The optimisation also included adjustments to the system layout, making smart use of existing components while improving product flows and transport routes. The result is a smoother operation, better overall system performance, and a future-ready installation.

Another great example of how continuous optimisation helps growers get even more out of their existing automation. 🙌🏻

Together with WPS, the nursery implemented a complete Plant Order System that connects order processing, internal plant transport, sorting, buffering, and packing into one automated workflow. Plants are picked in the greenhouse, automatically routed to the correct packing station, and prepared for shipment with minimal manual handling.
