Morpho Menelaus 🦋✨
The Morpho menelaus, also known as the blue morpho butterfly, is one of the most striking butterflies in the world, especially known for its bright iridescent blue wings. This butterfly lives in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, including countries such as Brazil and Costa Rica. The intense blue color is not due to pigment, but is created by microscopic structures on the wing scales that reflect light, an example of structural coloration 🦋
The upper side of the wings is bright blue and can reach a wingspan of up to 20 centimeters, while the underside is brown with eye spots. These eye spots serve as camouflage and protection against predators such as birds and reptiles. When the butterfly closes its wings, it blends in almost perfectly with its surroundings 🍂
The Morpho menelaus mainly feeds on rotting fruit, tree sap, and sometimes nectar. Unlike many other butterflies, it is therefore less dependent on flowers. Its flight is slow and fluttering, making it highly visible in sunlight ☀️
The Morpho menelaus remains a fascinating example of the beauty and complexity of rainforest insects 🗺️
