A Monday morning fact, close to home.

In the 1980s, the Netherlands had zero wild beavers. They had been gone for centuries. Today we have over 6,000. Through a handful of small reintroductions from 1988 onward, and four decades of leaving them alone.

Beavers dam streams. They slow water, filter nitrogen, rewet peat soils, and build habitat. Work a civil engineering firm would bill hundreds of thousands of euros for. Done, quietly, for nothing.

The cheapest climate engineer has four legs.

You don't have to build the solution. Sometimes you just have to stop removing it.

Most sustainability plans stall somewhere between the strategy deck and what people do on Monday morning.

The strategy is clear. The direction is set. But something happens between the boardroom presentation and daily decision-making. The plan gets stuck in the middle, where the design decisions are made. Training programmes. Reporting structures. Team rituals. None of them were built for what you are now asking of them.

Direction is where you agree on where you are going. The strategy is signed off. The targets are set.

Design is where you build the conditions for the behaviour to happen. This is where most organisations look away.

Development is where it becomes habit, not effort.

Most organisations are clear on Direction and expect Development to take care of itself. The problem sits in Design. That is where the work is, and where we focus.

That came from a conversation in 2025 with a senior leader at a Dutch housing association. I have not stopped thinking about it.

The strategy was solid. She had done the work. She knew what needed to change. But the organisation around her was not ready for it, and she did not know who was.

So she waited.

This is not a rare situation. Across 350+ organisations, this pattern comes up more than almost any other. People who have figured out what needs to happen and have gone quiet. Not because they gave up. Because they are reading the room.

What I keep wondering: how many strategies are sitting in draft right now, in someone's head, waiting for a signal it is safe to move?

A Monday morning fact hiding in plain sight.

Under every healthy forest is a fungal network most people never see. It links the trees through their roots, moving water, sugars, and warning signals between them. Old trees feed young ones. Sick trees are supplied by their neighbours. Some networks stretch for hundreds of kilometres, one continuous organism.

The tree you can see is only half the tree. The rest lives underground, working quietly, connecting everything.

Climate solutions mostly look up. Canopy cover. Tonnes of CO2 above ground.

Most of the real work is under our feet.
