A Monday morning fact, one for the strategy table.

If the cement industry were a country, it would be the third largest emitter on the planet, behind China and the United States. Cement alone accounts for about eight percent of global CO2, four billion tonnes a year.

The third biggest emitter on earth is not a country. It is a material we pour without thinking.

More than half of those emissions come from the chemistry, the carbon baked out of limestone as it becomes cement. Green power leaves that untouched.

The materials your organisation specifies are a climate decision, long before the building goes up.

A Monday morning fact, from under the water.

Seagrass meadows cover less than a tenth of a percent of the seabed. On that sliver they bury carbon up to thirty five times faster than a tropical rainforest, and hold something like a tenth of all the carbon in the ocean.

The fastest carbon sink on earth is not a forest. It is grass, underwater, in the shallows off our coasts.

The low-oxygen seabed keeps it locked for centuries. We have lost a lot of it to murky water and coastal building, often before anyone counted it.

Recovery is unglamorous. Cleaner water, protection, people replanting it by hand.

A Monday morning fact, and close to home for the Netherlands.

Peatlands cover about three percent of the world's land. On that thin sliver they hold twice as much carbon as every forest on the planet combined.

The biggest carbon store on land is not the rainforest. It is bog.

We drained our peat for farmland over centuries. Drained peat oxidises and leaks what it spent thousands of years storing, around four percent of global human emissions a year, most of it invisible.

The good news is quiet. Rewetting slows the loss almost at once. Mostly a decision about water levels.

A Monday morning fact, good for a hot week.

A single mature tree moves around 380 litres of water into the air on a warm day. All that evaporation pulls heat out of the street. The US Forest Service puts the cooling from one mature tree at roughly five air conditioners running twenty hours a day.

The best air conditioner on a hot street is not a machine. It is a tree.

Most heat plans reach for grey infrastructure first. The cheapest cooling we have runs on nothing and only asks for time in the ground.

The honest time to plant it was twenty years ago. The second best time is this week.

We work in two places that look far apart on a map and feel close in the room. The Netherlands and the Philippines.

A sustainability report and a sustainable culture are not the same thing. Across the Philippines the reports are landing, the SEC templates filled, the disclosures filed. And inside many of those same companies the daily decisions still get made the way they always were.

That gap is where the work sits. A report tells the regulator where you intend to go. The culture tells you whether anyone has started walking. Most boards measure the first and assume the second.

For the people who carry this, often a sustainability lead and an HR lead side by side, the question is not how to write a better report. It is how to make the sustainable choice the obvious one in an ordinary Tuesday meeting.

Most of the sustainability leads we work with are the only person in the building who thinks about this all day.

They are not lonely in an obvious way. They have colleagues, a full calendar, plenty of meetings. It is quieter than that. They carry a picture of where the organisation needs to go, mostly on their own, and over time they learn not to say so too often.

One told us she had stopped bringing it up at home, because even there it had started to sound heavy.

That is the person we built the FutureFit Leader Path for. Ten weeks, a small group, three live calls, and for once a room where you are not the only one holding the thread. She said the best part was not the content. It was sitting with nine other people who understood the weight before she had to explain it.
