In Q2 2026, the value of EU petroleum-oil imports increased by 55.8%, while import volume was only 1.2% above the 2025 monthly average.

That gap is an important procurement signal: spend pressure can rise much faster than physical demand.

Global goods trade remains above trend, but stronger momentum does not remove procurement risk.

The WTO Goods Trade Barometer reached 102.0 on 9 September 2026, above the 100 trend baseline and the previous reading of 101.7. Export orders and electronic components were also above trend, while the container shipping index stood slightly below trend at 99.6.

For procurement teams, the implication is clear: resilience still depends on supplier optionality, route flexibility and operational visibility.
