Over a decade ago, we started with solar and batteries on a ferry. We were one of the first architects to experiment with future fuels, such as NH3. We developed algorithms to design beyond human capabilities and applied big data to lower the total cost of ownership. American Ammonia technology company Amogy has converted a tugboat, the NH₃ Kraken, and appointed C-Job Naval Architects as their knowledge partner on the project. Together with Amogy, we helped integrate their ammonia power technology system into the design of the ship, as well as supporting onsite ex*****on activities at the shipyard. After a prosperous collaboration, the ship is now the first carbon-free, ammonia-powered vessel to set sail.

The maritime industry develops by challenging the obvious. Together with Glomar Offshore, a family-owned company operating a diverse fleet of purpose-built offshore support vessels, C-Job did just that by bringing their vision of an efficient and multi-faceted offshore vessel to life.

The vessel in question needed to be capable of supporting a wide range of offshore activities as well as providing exceptional crew comfort, all on a compact ship. We use our expertise in ship design to puzzle together a vessel which met all of Glomar's wants and needs, while also integrating sustainable elements and sleek looks.

For this month’s get to know us we’re introducing you to Maksym, a 26-year-old Hull Design Engineer and Coordinator at C-Job Nikolayev, the city where he was raised.

Maksym’s normal day at work is always busy and always starts with a to-do list, either working together with his project team, answering questions, or even assisting clients onsite. He has worked on various types of vessels including river cruises, fishing boats, mega yachts, dredgers, icebreakers, and container ships. His favorite project to work on was a project where he got to use Siemens NX. He enjoyed it so much that he even gave some internal trainings on the software. When asked, Maksym said that what he enjoyed the most about working at C-Job is that he is grateful to be in a position where he is helping change the world little by little, by contributing to a sustainable maritime industry. He also loves that C-Job is a leader in technological innovations.

Outside of work, Maksym is still an engineer at heart. He enjoys building Lego and Japanese models in his free time. Enjoying his hobbies on the weekend helps him destress after a long week. Maksym also enjoys reading, especially fantasy books. One fun fact about Maksym that you’d never guess? He loves music production and taught himself entirely on his own from online tutorials.

A C-Job designer perspective: longitudinal vs transverse monopile installation

As offshore wind foundations continue to grow, heavy lift vessel design is increasingly driven by installation philosophy rather than crane capacity and lifting height alone.

Therefore, while designing a heavy lift vessel, one of the most influential concept-stage decisions is whether monopiles are installed either longitudinally over the stern or transversely over the side of the ship.

While both approaches can achieve similar installation objectives, from a naval architect's perspective, they lead to fundamentally different vessel designs.

Longitudinal installation:
✔ Streamlined transfer from storage to installation position
✔ Handling within deck area
✔ Pile-run has limited impact on vessel stability

However:
▪ Requires more deck length
▪ Concentrates all large loads towards the stern
▪ Vessel motions limit workability during installation
▪ Thruster operating in direct vicinity of the monopile during installation
▪ More complex port-side monopile loading

Transverse installation:
✔ More centralized and better weight distribution
✔ More monopiles on deck
✔ Spatial separation of thrusters and monopile installation
✔ Greater mission flexibility
✔ Stronger DP performance with lower power utilization

However:
▪ Roll motions become a key workability driver
▪ Monopile handling steps outside of the work deck contour
▪ Pile-run susceptibility is important design parameter
▪ Monopile tip wetting risk in very harsh transit conditions

Interestingly, neither concept is universally better. The optimum solution depends on the complete system: monopile dimensions, port logistics, environmental conditions, DP requirements, installation sequence, and project economics.

In vessel design, the installation methodology often determines the vessel long before steel is ever cut. At C-Job, we help clients weigh these trade-offs against their specific project — which variable would dominate yours: DP performance, port logistics, or monopile dimensions?
