Within a generation, the marine industry will look completely different. Digitalization, an expanding world population, globalization, progressive technology will all have a tremendous impact. Climate change, circular economy, new energy sources will dramatically affect ‘the naval business model’ and drive innovation in an unprecedented manner. This creates enormous possibilities for designers, shipbuilders and -owners. As a dedicated naval architect, C-Job is driving change. Architectural innovation is our job. Over a decade ago, we started with solar and batteries on a ferry. We were one of the first architects to experiment with future fuels, such as NH3. We developed algorithms to design beyond human capabilities and applied big data to lower the total cost of ownership. We help our clients to build better ships, become 100% sustainable, and run better because of it. Sometimes vessels need to be modernized to catch up with the times, or even converted to serve a new purpose, but before a vessel can be refitted, you need to know the current situation of your vessel to ensure drawings and designs are up to date. In order to see the current layout of the vessel's equipment arrangement or pipe routing, C-Job's expert engineers can carry out 3D scans to capture all of the precise details. Having an up-to-date and accurate view of your vessel will lead to a more efficient and consistent design process for your refit.

The Texelstroom, maybe the most iconic ferry of the Netherlands, transports passengers to and from the Dutch island of Texel and Den Helder and was designed by C-Job for her owner, TESO veerdienst. The Texelstroom is the first passenger ferry to run on compressed natural gas (CNG), so C-Job applied our risk-based design approach and worked closely with regulators to ensure compliance. The resulting design led to one of the most comfortable and eco-friendly ferries in operation, aligning with TESO’s sustainability goals. Have you ever taken a journey on this beauty?

Last weekend team C-Job took part in the Rotterdam Harbour Run. They navigated the course full of obstacles and made it over the finish line together! Experiencing the bustling Rotterdam Harbor, which is the largest in Europe, and the cheering crowds, made all the effort worth it. Well done, C-Jobbers!

While working together with Mike Hooks LLC and SPI/Mobile Pulley Works (MPW), C-Job was given the freedom to design a modern and efficient dredger to meet all her owner's needs. C-Job delivered the concept, basic, and detail design, plus systems integration for the project. The resulting vessel, the Lorraine Hooks, is a stationary 27-inch cutter section dredger that's equipped with an idler barge, a spud carrier system, a submerged dredge pump, comfortable accommodation for 35 people, and more. After delivery in 2023, she operates in the Gulf Coast market of the United States, and demonstrates C-Job’s ability to closely collaborate with suppliers and customers across the world, in order to optimize vessel design.

Every year the C-Jobbers from our Dutch offices get together at the annual Day of the C-Jobber where they can bond, do some teambuilding, and just have fun. This year our teams gathered in Amsterdam to play some survivor style games in the 'Expeditie Robionson' themed challenge. Our communication, balance, and problem solving were tested, and we came out stronger on the other side! We're looking forward to next year's event already.

Groundbreaking designs are not something C-Job is unfamiliar with. C-Job worked together with Padmos, a family run shipbuilder, on behalf of their client and shipowner, Kotug on the E-Pusher 1, an innovative, fully electric and zero-emission pusher tug with a hull made of HDPE plastic. The lightweight and durable hull is weather and rot proof with low maintenance requirements, and its electric propulsion system ensures that it operates silently, reducing noise in populated areas.

Walk the deck of a typical cable-lay vessel and you'll notice it's crowded: carousels, tensioners, ROV hangars, trenching spreads, CPS handling all fighting for the same square meters. Every system has its place, but there's no slack anywhere in the layout.

We investigated operational data from this type of vessel, and it confirmed exactly what that crowding predicts. Across the vessels we looked at, cable laying and handling itself accounts for only 10–20% of time spent on offshore wind projects. Roughly 30–40% of the time, cable laying vessels are non-productive. But it isn't a scheduling problem; it's a design problem.

When a deck has zero spare capacity, there's no flexibility when things don't go exactly to plan. Yet almost every early design conversation surrounding cable laying vessels starts the same way: "We need a bigger carousel," which in the end usually only makes the problem worse.
