𝗠𝗙 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦, 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗲𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝘂𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

It is always nice to receive compliments, especially when they come spontaneously after a very satisfying project. This one came from the Owners of the double-ender ferry PROTEAS, a typical Greek ferry with four azimuth thrusters, one on each corner and ramps forward and aft, of the kind that lines the shores of Salamina.

This ferry type is designed for the short crossing to Perama (Athens) of 1.2 kilometres, 0.65 nautical miles, that takes about 15 minutes. She found a new Owner in Angola. The voyage to her new home port was by comparison an astronomic 5,981 nautical miles taking 34 days, for which Redwise, with a history of 120 years of global ship delivery, was contacted and contracted.

Built as she was for short domestic runs, it will not come as a surprise that quite a few modifications and upgrades of safety, firefighting and navigational/radio equipment were required, as well as converting void spaces for additional bunker capacity. Next to that, equipping a galley, freezer capacity, freeing ports and ramp securing, to name the main items, all in compliance with the IACS guidelines. This was all done in close consultation with Owners, their representatives, builders, Class and the Marine Warranty Surveyor. Apart from the voyage, also the H&M and P&I cover were arranged by Redwise, as is done for approx. one third of all delivery voyages under own power on own keel. For this purpose a facility is in place with an A+ rated insurance group, one of the world's largest, through our trusted insurance brokers and based on 120 years of proven performance.
From Piraeus she sailed the length of the Mediterranean, out through the Strait of Gibraltar and past Tenerife, bunkering at Mindelo in the Cape Verde islands before the last leg south to Luanda, keeping within reach of the African coast rather than standing out into the Atlantic.

Receiving a compliment for our crews, superintendent and organisation is then the icing on the cake. An extra motivator that makes one feel proud when it comes from the heart.

31 Years of Service. A Big Thank You, Marianne.

Having been the first point of contact for many of our seafarers, customers and suppliers, our Marianne has retired.

With tears and laughs, enormous dedication, sending daily news reports to the vessels from when we only had our Satcom C’s up to today, ensuring there was always sufficient supply of (working) clothes, coffee, fruit, drinks, cleaning up, keeping all kinds of records and address lists up to date, housekeeping, ordering taxis, courier services, contractors to fix lights and windows, a listening ear for those at sea and their families, relaying messages to them, and so on. All these tasks and a lot more, we easily took for granted, often forgotten, but oh so essential. All with a personal touch.

More than a generation of seafarers, their families and shore-based personnel passed through. Different head offices, different people, and a change in communication from the daily telexes and telegrams, through the first box-sized mobile phones and fax machines, to today's e-mail and video calls. Ownership changed too, from Wijsmuller to Svitzer to independence. You have seen it all and adapted.

Marianne, a big 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞 𝗬𝗢𝗨 from all of us, whether on board, on leave, holiday or ashore. Enjoy retirement with your husband Frank starting with this beautiful sunny summer day.

𝗛𝘂𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝟯𝟬 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 – On 13 October 2026, it will be exactly 120 years since our very first ship delivery voyage commenced. Redwise is celebrating 120 Years of Ship Delivery, as the world's oldest and most experienced specialist in delivering vessels on their own keel under their own power.

It all began when Joh. F. Wijsmuller departed from the Netherlands with his crew on board the steam tug 𝗠.𝗢.𝗣. 𝟮𝟮𝟮𝗕 on a 6,500-nautical-mile voyage to Argentina. That voyage started with ingenuity. The propeller was removed and a temporary sailing rig improvised, achieving what others deemed undoable through astute seamanship and respect for the weather. This journey marked the beginning of a maritime company that evolved into BV Bureau Wijsmuller before coming full circle as Redwise in 2004. Being 100% independent, with a free spirit and open mind to tackle each challenge and remain true to its beliefs, Redwise remains a marine services company leading Global Ship Delivery and operating in distinct maritime niches. Above all, this milestone is a tribute to the generations of captains, officers, engineers, crew members, superintendents, shore staff and directors whose professionalism, dedication and seamanship have made each and every voyage possible.

Since that first voyage, Redwise has delivered thousands of vessels across the globe on their own keel. From tugs, fishing vessels and ferries to dredgers, offshore vessels, tankers and highly specialised ships. Every delivery is different, yet each project is built on the same principles: knowledge, safety, seamanship, thorough preparation, respect for the weather, and responsibility.

While Ship Delivery remains at the heart of the company, Redwise has expanded its activities over the years. Today, the company also provides Crewing, Deep Sea Pilotage, Offshore Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), and operates its own survey vessel, 𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗖 , supporting a wide range of offshore and seabed research projects.

"Celebrating 120 years of Ship Delivery is about much more than the number itself. It is a tribute to the generations of dedicated seafarers, colleagues, clients, and partners who have all contributed to making it happen," said Willem-Jan Hamers, Managing Director of Redwise. "Shipping has changed enormously over this period, from sail to steam to motor-driven vessels, from dominant European liner companies and famous shipbuilders to investors and ship managers with multinational crews and an enormous increase in scale including the once-unthinkably large shipyards in Japan, Korea and China. Shipping and working on board have become a lot safer. Some may still remember the perishing of sailing ships, groundings, tanker explosions etc. The introduction of gyros, radars, satellite navigation and communication, more reliable engines, better understanding, and stronger legislation have all greatly improved safety and were needed as well to keep up with the increase in scale. This may have overshot itself, with the ever-growing disregard for experience and seamanship in favour of an undue reliance on procedures, checklists, inspections, vetting and a blame culture, and a demand for schedules and (extreme) profits."

The dedicated anniversary website, www.redwise120.com, will feature the company's history, milestone projects, historic photographs and stories from the people who have helped shape Redwise over the past 120 years. Over time it will grow into a living archive, drawing information from decades of physical file cabinets and records that we are still working our way through, sharing the best of what we dig up. Throughout the year, a series of articles and features will highlight the company's heritage while also looking ahead to the future.

Five wins. One incredible run🏆🏆🏆

The momentum just keeps building for Roeiteam Gouteyck. Since our last update celebrating back-to-back victories,the team has gone on to secure three more first-place finishes in the Heren 1 class at Urk, Grouand Harderwijk (Images in order). We are proud to sponsor Roeiteam Gouteyck, and what a season they are having. Once again, rough water, strong current, and they delivered on all three occasions.

For those curious about the details:
• Grou: 22.5 kilometres completed in 2:06, averaging 83.45 watts per rower.
• Urk: 15.5 kilometres completed in 1:27:46, averaging 89.57 watts per rower.
• Harderwijk: 13 kilometres completed in 1:24:00, averaging 84.00 watts per rower.

Five victories from five races is no coincidence. It takes preparation, commitment and the ability to perform under pressure in order to pull this off. In a once-in-a-blue-moon occurring “door-to-door delivery”, Redwise was requested to mobilize the shallow draft survey launch POLARIS II from Northern Germany to Sardinia. Due to its dimensions, a special transport was arranged by Redwise with Messrs. Van der Wees to truck the vessel to Mandelieu in the south of France on a deep loader, after which she was delivered on her own keel to Porto-Vecchio in Sardinia. Limitations on loading quays and ferries prohibited trucking the vessel to Porto Cervo.

Redwise has been contracted for the technical and crew management of the POLARIS II, conducting nearshore survey operations on the Italian coast together with the Redwise-owned and operated survey launch BALTIC. Superintendent Ake van der Vinne played an active role throughout the entire project, from classification and registration under the Dutch flag to supervising loading and discharging operations, as well as serving as a “crewmember” during the final leg of the voyage.

The coastal voyage, almost resembling a holiday experience along the French and Italian Riviera, was carried out by a team of four, including a crew member from the Owners who had been working closely together with the team throughout the entire preparation of the vessel.Following launch in Mandelieu, the first days of the project focused on preparing the vessel for the passage to Sardinia. With the vessel’s limitations in fuel capacity, lack of onboard accommodation, and restrictions under her certification, the voyage itself was conducted from marina to marina, with overnight stays in the ports of call.

As the voyage progressed along the Italian coastline, POLARIS II gradually settled into an operational rhythm. During the stop in Loano, the crew addressed the usual teething problems to ensure that the vessel was fully ready to commence her survey duties upon arrival. At the same time, engine performance and fuel consumption continued to be monitored and fine-tuned following recent overhaul works, providing valuable operational insights and data throughout the mobilization.

Between port calls and daily operational routines, there were also quieter moments under calm Mediterranean conditions, including occasional sightings of dolphins. From La Spezia, the route south took POLARIS II further along the Italian coastline and across towards Corsica, with operational stops in Rosignano Marittimo, Port de Toga, and Porto-Vecchio before arrival in Northern Sardinia.

Conditions throughout the voyage varied significantly between each leg. Some days brought calm Mediterranean seas and long coastal passages under clear skies, while others introduced rolling swell, reduced visibility, and stronger winds near the Strait of Bonifacio.

Following successful delivery, POLARIS II commenced survey activities in the waters surrounding Northern Sardinia, employing two Masters and two ABs from Redwise on a 4-weeks-on / 4-weeks-off rotation while accommodated ashore, together with the client's Surveyor.

Eight years ago, Redwise took over the Deep Sea Pilotage activities of Royal Dirkzeager Coastal & Deep Sea Pilots, marking the beginning of Redwise DCP. Since then, we have remained committed to delivering the highest standards in Deep Sea Pilotage through professionalism, safety, and support to our clients.

We are proud to celebrate this milestone with gratitude to our clients, partners, and exceptional pilots, whose professionalism and dedication in often challenging conditions have made it possible.

Since then, our experienced pilots have supported countless vessel transits, helping ships navigate safely and efficiently across some of Europes busiest and most challenging waterways. We proudly celebrate this milestone and thank everyone who has contributed to Redwise DCP over the past eight years.

The Redwise team recently attended ITS 2026 in Gothenburg, Sweden!

ITS remains one of those events for us where business and relationships come together. It's a chance to discuss ongoing projects, exchange new experiences, and reconnect with colleagues and old friends across the industry. Throughout the week, the booth was a meeting point for functional conversations, but it also sparked quite a few historical discussions not only about Redwise and its history, but also maritime at large, including a number of former colleagues from the pre-Redwise days who found their way back to the stand.

Together with IMS, we exhibited at the event and spent the week catching up with clients and many familiar (and new) faces from across the tug and salvage industry. It was also interesting to see the latest developments within the maritime industry and hear how others are responding to the opportunities and challenges within the maritime sector today.

A particular highlight was Thursday's tug presentation, where we had the opportunity to see the ElectRA 2500SX Svitzer Ingrid and the TundRA 3000 Svitzer Embla up close.
