If only one of these European youth representatives brings into their future the importance of dialogue as a democratic instrument, the power of listening to experiences rather than opinions, and the indispensable value of inclusion for a more cohesive society, this week in Portugal will be a success. Chance is though, that it’s going to be more than one.

Thank you, Youth Line, for inviting me to guide this group into uneasy and yet meaningful explorations. And each participant for letting themselves be guided.

You cannot always read my mind

Many times, I wished others would guess my needs before I expressed them. I succeeded only a few of those times.

On some occasions, I was aware of this wish. Oftentimes, I unilaterally determined I had been clear enough.

Frustration grew like grass weeds on abandoned soil. Fertile ground for resentment and distance.

“I am not being understood”, I thought. “I am not being heard”, I concluded. I even believed it was intentional.

I don’t have to tell you what those relationships became. You can probably relate. As in first, second, or third person.

In retrospect, what other destiny was to predict when I entrusted my needs to the uncertain hands of someone else?

When, instead of recognizing and expressing them, I would fantasize about others’ ability to read my mind?

And I was fortunate to be mind-read at times. Yet, how delusional to let my needs depend on luck. To hope that others hear them without me expressing them.

That what is not clear to me about me, it can be clear to others.

I am facing the helplessness of reassuming in a couple of pictures and a bunch of words, one of the most memorable professional and human experience my already long life on earth has witnessed.

Receiving the trust, honour and a good deal of recklessness from my dearest friend Sveta, to take 28 youth workers from 5 EU states on a perilous compassionate journey. Combining the core of the NVC principles with one of the most urgent social challenges of our times: racism and discrimination.

The intensity of this past week, marked by a continuous swing between depth and lightness, challenges and growth, discomfort and connection, is hard to describe with the precision that it would require. So I won't.

I just want to say how immeasurably grateful I am for having Sveta in my life. And I wished I had another day to exchange more long interminable hugs with each one of the participants.

I am in a state of bliss.

Sometimes life is a bit too much. Much is the chaos prevailing over order.

I need that order, so to find words for my short breath, my sore chest, my frowning expression.

Iget the cards and take the time. I step into the elevator of my consciousness and move up from level to level. Until I locate feelings above my feelings, the needs beyond my needs. Until order prevails over chaos. Clueless of actions to take yet. Mindful of whom they belong to.

Knowing they are mine is the hard part. And non-accidentally also the easiest.

In case you wonder, I took a little break. For the first time in years and years and years, I didn't bring work on vacation. Not because I needed disconnection from my clients. I actually never do. Simply the type of trip could not combine well with a coaching schedule. Anyways, this is just to say "Hi, I am back". Did you miss me? Show me then 😁.

What does it mean to observe without judging? How does reality change when we separate what truly happens from our interpretation of what happens? Jiddu Krishnamurti quotes: "The highest form of intelligence is the ability to observe without evaluation." To observe is thus to describe what we see, what we hear, what we touch, outside of moralistic views and judgmental interpretations.

While it might sound straightforward and uncomplicated, it is in fact one of the hardest things to do for many of us, and among the primary reasons for distressing and unhealthy relationships with others and ourselves.

This online workshop is an unexpected discovery of the power of words in our lives and the lives of our relationships. An enlightening exploration of how a conscious use of observational language vs an unconscious use of interpretative language can determine the destiny of our emotional reactions.
