Today we indulge with a favourite for the ages: the Kruydtboeck by Matthias de Lobel. In and of itself a joy to behold, but this particular copy was completely handcoloured by an old hand. The colours are lovely, meticulous and very well-preserved and they will make their new owner very happy!

Of course this lovely piece was sold in our . No worries, will be around before you know it!

Thursday 14th May is Ascension Day, but we are open just the same!

Come to pick your books up? All right! We are ready!

Are you interested in the after sale? Very good! Send us a bid via our site or pop us a phone call.

Nota bene, again; we are going to work on your invoices as soon as we can; you will receive them via e-mail within the next week-and-a-half!

Image as always by the elusive CreativeCat7. (Give the artist some extra love, as she is at the moment doing final exams for high school!)

Second day of our auction and we are buzzing! You, however, can feast your eyes on lot 1086, this gorgeous set of Robert’s Egypt & Nubia, a work from 1846-49 full with duotone lithographs of monuments and views of, well, Egypt and Nubia. These are big books, we cannot lie; they’ll set you back about 62x44 cm each. We LOVE a large folio!

The Robert’s, a Scottish painter, travelled to the Near East without patronage of the military or any missionary group and produced this monumental work. It’s quite rare to see a set in this state.

See you on the flip side!

Today is auction day! To bring us all good fortune here some pics of lot number 482, an Ottoman grimoire from the late 18th century: a book of talismans and astrology, used for protection and divination. If you take some time to study its contents, it could probably tell you what to bid, on what lot, and when.

Until the midday there is still time to place some last bids for this afternoon’s session, which starts at 13.30, or to check your connectivity if you want to bid online!

To celebrate our viewing days we present you with a very special piece of World Wildlife Fund merch indeed.

In 1977, the WWF commissioned six prints from Kananginak Pootoogook, Kenojuak Ashevak, and the estate of Peter Pitseolak, all artists belonging to the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, and published them in this gorgeous edition. The lithographs are quite beautiful to begin with, but they’re also large-folio size (that’s BIG, people) so they’re also impressive.

We have the entire set in its original half-suede portfolio, it’s lot 289 in our catalogue. Today we’re open from 12.00 to 17.00; come and see this set and all the other beautiful things!

We have lot of Arab / arabic books in our about mostly historical and linguistic subjects. This one however, sent us straight into a rabbit hole. This manuscript belongs in the tradition and genre of the ‘ilm al-bâh, delicately translated as “science of coitus”. Historically, discussion of s*x was a part of jurisprudence (put that down to the boondoggle that is marriage under patriarchy), but Islamic culture had also this separate genre, which seems to comprise a mix of proto-s*xology, both medical, astrological and psychological, and literary erotica. (All this in good faith; without an established scientific vocabulary the line between those genres is very fine indeed).

This manuscript is called “Book of s*xual science and the natural sciences”. It’s from somewhere in the 19th century, very prettily written, with an astrological diagram and some gilt bling in there too. Come see it during our viewing days!

Good morning! Today we bring you this very very nice set of E.G. Guyot’s “Nieuwe Natuur- en wiskonstige vermaaklykheden”, which is basically 18th century Science For Dummies. Translated from a French original, it’s full of mathematical and physical curiosities, experiments & tricks on various wonders of nature such as optical illusions, magical lanterns and ⚡️electricity ⚡️. Best of all are the meticulous handcoloured pictures of said curiosities, experiments & tricks.

It’s number 1134 in our catalogue, but of course our viewing days are coming up. Drop in this weekend and have a look-see!
