time! Did you know Airbus skipped certain Manufacturer Serial Numbers (MSNs) before reaching MSN 10000?

While the 10,000th A320 family aircraft (delivered to Middle East Airlines in 2020) marked a significant milestone, it did not mean exactly 10,000 aircraft had been built up to that point.

Key details on Airbus MSN skipping and allocation include:

Unused Numbers: The range between MSN 9600 and 9900 was not used in the final production sequence.

"Virtual" or Test MSNs: Some MSNs are allocated to aircraft that are ordered but never built (white tails, cancelled orders), or used as test numbers to prepare for the 5-digit MSN format.

Strategic 5-Digit Shift: Airbus began switching to a 5-digit MSN format (e.g., 10000) for the A320neo family well before the actual production numbers reached that point, updating software and documentation for compliance.

Therefore, while MSN 10000 was ceremonially delivered, it was achieved by skipping several hundred numbers, with actual production and delivery numbers being lower than 10,000 at the time of that delivery.

Have you ever wondered what happens to aircraft prototypes when testing is finished?

In our new series, "Where are they now?" we dive into the afterlife of the first kind of many commercial jetliners that shaped the skies, and our market.

Starting with the commercial best seller from the USA, the Boeing 737 Next Generation.

Curious to know what happened with the other types? Follow us for more aviation trivia!

The MD-80, or Super 80, is an aircraft loved by pilots and engineers alike. But there is something very goofy going on in the flightdeck of this jet.

time!

Look closely when you step into a Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental and something feels… slightly different.

The windows are more rounded than on earlier 747s. Almost softer in shape.

That’s not accidental.
The 747-8I borrowed its cabin window design from the Boeing 777, reflecting Boeing’s newer widebody design language. The result is a brighter cabin, a slightly larger view outside, and an interior that feels more modern, a quiet evolution of a very loud icon.

What makes it even more interesting is the contrast. The doors still carry the traditional 747 window shape, and so do the upper-deck windows on the 747-8F. On the same airframe, you can literally see Boeing blending the past with the present.

A subtle detail, but a perfect reminder that in aviation, even the smallest design choices tell a much bigger story.

It's ! Did you know that 28 MD-90s had an MD-11 style glass cockpit?

In the mid-1990s, McDonnell Douglas built 28 MD-90s for Saudi Arabian Airlines featuring MD-11 EFIS instrumentation and overhead panels. The motivation was operational efficiency. Saudia operated both the MD-11 and the MD-90 and wanted to simplify crew transitions between the two aircraft types.

The result was a rare hybrid design that combined MD-11 displays and overhead architecture with an MD-80 autopilot and systems panels, all built around a pedestal layout tracing its lineage back to the DC-8 and DC-9. In some aircraft, even 717-style yokes made an appearance. Unusual at first glance, the layout reflects a deliberate focus on training commonality over generational consistency.

This design approach later re-emerged on the 717 (MD-95), which adopted the MD-11-style cockpit layout, this time with LCD displays instead of CRTs.
A strong reminder that cockpit design is often driven as much by airline operations and training strategy as by technology itself!

✈️ | The amazing story about PH-BFB. A Queen Close to Home

The former KLM Boeing 747-406 PH-BFB, named City of Bangkok, is one of those aircraft whose story goes far beyond hours and cycles.

Delivered in 1989, PH-BFB spent decades flying intercontinental routes, with a strong link to Asia. In line with her name, the aircraft was ceremonially blessed by Buddhist monks from Thailand, a rare and symbolic baptism intended to ensure safe and prosperous journeys.

After her final flight, this Queen of the Skies found a truly unique second life. Acquired by the Corendon Group, PH-BFB was transported over land in a remarkable operation and now stands proudly in front of the Corendon Village Hotel in Badhoevedorp, just outside Schiphol. Repainted in Corendon colours, she remains an unmistakable landmark.

What makes this even more special for us: PH-BFB is located just a few kilometres away from our HQ, and the aircraft is open to visitors, allowing aviation enthusiasts to step inside a true long-haul icon.

From monk-blessed globe-trotter to local legend, some Queens never truly retire.
