One of the joys of growing plants is discovering hidden gems that deserve a place in more gardens. Pimpinella major 'Rosea' is one of those.
Its delicate pink umbels appear in late spring, much earlier than many other umbellifers, bringing softness, movement, and elegance to the garden.
The airy flower heads create a transparent effect, allowing gardeners to layer plants visually without creating heavy blocks of color.
Its flowers move gracefully in the wind, making it a favorite in naturalistic and prairie-style plantings.
I first started growing the plant after asked me to. He uses it for his design The Oudolf Landscape at where he combines Pimpinella major 'Rosea' and Salvia 'Crystal Blue'.
Although it looks delicate, it is a surprisingly robust perennial that can thrive for many years in suitable conditions. And it makes for an excellent plant for pollinators, attracting a wide range of bees, hoverflies, and other beneficial insects.
The species is native to large parts of Europe, where it naturally occurs in meadows, woodland edges, and grasslands.
A subtle beauty that rewards those who take a closer look!
