Creating a flowering lawn sounds simple. Creating one that can still be mown regularly is much more challenging.
For the development of our Happy Lawn concept, we tested a lot of flowers and grass combinations across Europe. We evaluate flowering intensity, flowering period and most importantly, how well flowers persist under regular mowing. We also monitor insect biodiversity.
The goal is to find the right balance: a lawn that supports insects biodiversity, adds colour to urban spaces and remains practical to manage.
🌼🐝 More flowers. More biodiversity. Still mowable.

Visualizing root development in detail

Using transparent root cylinders, we can directly observe and monitor root growth over time under controlled conditions.

In addition, these systems are often used during demos and exhibitions to clearly demonstrate how deep our grasses can root, making below-ground performance visible and tangible.

Simulating low-light conditions in the field

Using a shade cloth, we create controlled reductions in light intensity, mimicking conditions such as growth under trees or in urban environments with limited light availability.

This setup allows us to assess how different grass varieties respond to reduced light, while maintaining natural field conditions for factors like rainfall and airflow.

By analysing performance under these conditions, we gain deeper insights into traits such as shade tolerance and stability. Supporting the continuous optimisation of our shadow solutions.

Building Drought Resilience
Across Europe, drought is becoming an increasingly common challenge.

In a previous video, we introduced our Rainout Shelter, where we simulate drought conditions to evaluate how grasses and grass-herb mixtures perform under water stress. We measure drought tolerance, recovery after rewatering, and water use efficiency.

The differences are significant. Some species and varieties stay green longer, while others recover faster once rainfall returns. Grass-herb mixtures can also behave very differently from pure grass stands.

These insights help us develop resilient solutions for a changing climate.

Because resilience is not just about surviving drought, but recovering stronger afterwards.

Rethinking grass in orchard systems🌳
Our research focuses on finding the best grass solutions under fruit and avenue trees.

By studying the interaction between grass and performance, and through collaborations like SolidTree, we gain valuable insights for future applications.
