How nice to be back again in Amsterdam, at the Dutch Royal Tropical Institute on the occasion of the International Course on Health in Fragile Environments for the Military Doctor. And what a pleasure again to teach bright young military doctors on Public Health and expeditionary operational medicine, to share some good experiences from my own military career and prevent them from making the mistakes we made within this field in the past!
I have been involved in this course since 1996 and hope I’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.

Felt honoured to have been invited as a speaker representing IED-Training Solutions Ltd in the “Informal Shipowners Security Forum” meeting in London. The discussion topics were very interesting and the mutual issues, challenges and experiences which were shared were interesting and very recognizable for me as a Navy Doctor. It is a comforting thought, that “Security” is a very important topic on the shipowner’s agenda. I hope they will invite us back in the future and very keen in offering my expertise and advise regarding health aspects of the Shipping Industry. “Boreel Medical Consultancy” and IED-Training Solutions Ltd are ready and prepared to deliver advice, support and solutions. 👍

Linked, just one of the many media reports on the current outbreak of Noro virus (aka Winter’s Vomiting Disease) amongst Security personnel for the Olympic Games. Noro virus gastroenteritis is an annually returning disease, which may affects large proportions of the population. I hope the Korean Public Health authorities, in concert with IOC, will be able to contain this outbreak. Particularly with big events, such as the Olympic Games, this highly infectious disease has a tendency to spread at a very high rate. For the various national teams, spread of this infection amongst the athletes will obviously be disastrous for their athletic achievements.

Control methods are important, but relatively simple:
- hand washing, hand washing, hand washing;
- avoid hand-shaking;
- isolate patients from those who are still healthy, stay away from sick patients, use separate accommodations and sanitary facilities;
- don’t drink tap water, only drink bottled water from a reliable source;
- only consume properly cooked well heated food, no raw vegetables, peel fruit (“cook it, boil it, peel it, or forget it”)
- ensure that strict HACCP measures are being implemented and there should be no place for sick kitchen staff into the kitchen;

None of the cases are athletes, and the COC said no Canadian staff members have been affected

Interesting news on Influenza! What can we do to prevent further spreading of the current outbreak? Just a few tips!
1. Wash hands frequently;
2. When coughing, cover your cough, wash hands;
3. When one suspects a developing Influenza, stay home and don’t go to work. Don’t send sick children to school, kindergarten or nurseries;
4. When possible, avoid close contact with other people with Influenza;
5. When possible, still get your annual Influenza vaccination.

The agency said baby boomers now have the second-highest hospitalization rate, and the pediatric death rate is especially alarming.
