In a functioning democracy, the role of government officialsโ€”whether elected or appointedโ€”is fundamentally clear: to provide excellent public service. This is their duty, not a favor granted to the public. As such, the relationship between government officials and the people must be understood correctly: it is not the people who owe gratitude to those in power, but the officials who are indebted to the citizens. After all, their authority, power, and resources are entrusted to them by the public.

Moreover, seeking or expecting recognition for fulfilling this duty is misplaced. Public service is not about garnering applause or praise; it is about fulfilling obligations with integrity and competence. While the achievements of government officials may occasionally be acknowledged, they should not be the focus, nor are they inherently deserving of celebration. Why? Because their actions are the bare minimum expected of individuals entrusted with public resources.

These resourcesโ€”authority, power, and fundingโ€”are not personal assets of government officials but are loaned by the people. With this trust comes the responsibility to use them prudently, equitably, and in service to the greater good. As stewards of public trust, officials must always remember that their mandate is not one of privilege, but of accountability.

In essence, recognition in governance should not be automatic or obligatory, as public service is a responsibility, not a platform for personal glorification.
