Three more names from the 𝗟𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲® 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝟱𝟬: 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗱 ( #45), 𝗧𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 ( #44) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 ( #43) — proof once again of the range of varieties professionals across the sector rate most highly right now.

𝗔𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗱 (No. 45) is a very productive, soft-pink double Oriental lily that represents the modern taste of Asia.

𝗧𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 (No. 44) is a familiar face that remains a firm favourite with our customers. Thanks to its bright, clear white flower, it keeps proving itself time and again, even after all these years, and is also part of our New Zealand range.

𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 (No. 43) is a real workhorse with powerful orange flowers. Great for bouquets.

𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗻𝗮𝗺 🌏

Another Onings trip abroad, this time with Paul Onings and Randy van Paassen visiting growers and customers in Vietnam. Good conversations, greenhouse visits, and plenty of relationship-building, exactly the kind of trip that keeps happening, wherever in the world our customers are.

The Vietnamese lily market is going through a period of change, with climate change among the challenges growers are facing. Still, there was plenty of positive energy to be felt. Paul and Randy met ambitious entrepreneurs, growers looking to expand, and customers actively searching for new varieties, better quality, and new opportunities.

Double lilies continue to gain attention, new varieties are being tested, and several growers are already planning for next season. "It was especially encouraging to see that quality, service and long-term relationships remain important in this very competitive market," says Paul.

For Randy, this was his first time meeting our Vietnamese partners in person, a good moment to ask directly how they see their relationship with Onings, and where we can do better. One thing didn't go to plan: heavy rain had flooded several farms around Hanoi, so visiting those fields wasn't possible this time.

Still, a valuable trip, with plenty of ideas to bring back home. Thank you to everyone who welcomed them, shared their thoughts, and showed them around.

Our annual activity was a blast 🎶

We started off with some cool VR-games. After a good Dutch, and Turkish buffet, we played an interactive game of 'music bingo'. Some of us returned home with a prize. Others with nothing but a big smile 😀

It was legendary!

In July, we proudly announced our new partnership as sales partner for Biancheri Creazioni Ranunculus from Italy. Now the moment is finally here: the bulbs are harvested in Italy and brought to the Netherlands exactly when each grower needs them. We give them one final check on arrival, then make sure they reach the grower right on time.

Our colleague Nick van Zijl spent the past months visiting "his" growers to get everything ready for this, and now it's actually happening: the bulbs are arriving. As you can see, he's got his hands rather full 😉

A beautiful product, and we can't wait to share the next chapter with you: the moment these bulbs turn into flowers at our growers'.

The Lily League top 50 shows the lily varieties most in demand right now, according to the growers, exporters and florists who cast their vote. Each a favourite in its own right, and over the coming months we're highlighting them one by one. This time: Mundial, Zelmira and Profundo.

Mundial (No. 48) is already beautiful at harvesting stage, because all flower buds colour fully before opening.

Zelmira (No. 47) stands out for its striking colour combination — a variety that draws the eye in any bouquet.

Profundo (No. 46) is tall, rich and strong. A long-time favourite for many OT lily growers..

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗶𝘄𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 🌏
Visiting our customers in person isn't a once-a-year thing at Onings, it's something our sales team does throughout the year, wherever those customers happen to be. Mats' most recent trip, to China and Taiwan, was part of that same rhythm.

He travelled there to visit customers and growing locations firsthand, talk through what's moving in the market, walk the crops in person, and see with his own eyes how our tulip and lily bulbs are grown and used on the other side of the world.

One thing that struck him in Taiwan: how specific the market there is about lilies. "𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘶𝘥𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘥," Mats explains. It's a good reminder that more flowers doesn't automatically mean more value. It also shows why testing new varieties at an early stage matters so much, in the end, it all comes down to what the local market actually wants.

All new varieties are tested several times at different moments. With this late trial, when the bulbs are stored for half a year and the temperature during planting and growing is high, you can see the real strength of a variety 💪

The end of tulip season 🌷

The last tulip bulbs are leaving our cold stores these days. Soon, the next season will begin.

This year our bulbs travel the world once again: to Japan, China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Vietnam. Most of them go to professional landscaping projects, the rest to flower growers or garden centres, where consumers use the bulbs to fill their gardens with color again.

This year we supplied beautiful varieties once more, with Cheerleader and Dreamer as this season's toppers, alongside strong demand for our mini and species tulips and muscari (also known as grape hyacinths).

We will also send a selection of bulbs to Keukenhof again: new and special varieties for the Willem-Alexander pavilion, and amazing combinations of flowerbulbs for our field in front of the Oranje-Nassau pavilion. The bulbs will be planted in October and will bloom from late March to mid-May when the Keukenhof is open to the public.

"Every year we're curious whether our promotion has made a difference for our customers," says Henk van Voorbergen, tulip buyer at Onings. "This year we brought out a brochure featuring mini tulips and muscari. That fine, detailed work, with lovely colors and varieties at very affordable prices, has definitely generated plenty of demand from customers worldwide."

We can't wait to see how our bulbs brighten up landscapes and gardens again after the winter.
