New Regulatory Focus on Portable CO₂ Detectors for Ships: GMI & Dräger Solutions for Compliance

A critical shift is underway in maritime safety: portable detection of CO₂ is now a de facto regulatory requirement, not just best practice. While no new SOLAS amendment explicitly mandates it, PSC inspectors (Paris/Tokyo MoU) are increasingly detaining vessels that lack CO₂-capable portable monitors—especially where fixed CO₂ firefighting systems are installed.
The trigger? Revised IMO guidance (MSC.1/Circ.1313/Rev.1, 2023), which states:
“Atmospheric testing shall include measurement of O₂, flammable gases, toxic gases, and asphyxiants such as CO₂ before and during entry.”
