This week was full of surprises. It is rare that I have 2 births back to back like I did this week. I ended March by supporting my 100th momma as she welcomed her sweet one into the world and right after welcomed April supporting a fellow doula as she welcomed her sweet one into the world. Amazing to see these women so fiercely labor with courage and determination. It is such a joy and privilege to be trusted to support women.

It was an unusual day for me at the hospital, firstly, it was snowing! My favorite thing! Growing up in the west of America, it snowed every winter and I remember as a kid being amazed with the falling snowflakes and loving the patterns of how they fell. But, more unusual was being there to support a family that I had met before. A doula colleague, called and asked if I would able to help out while she was with another family, and of course I was happy to help. It was sweet to see this family again and support them during what I would say is an extra fun snow filled day! ❄️❄️❄️

Sometimes things progress so differently then I expect. Birth is unpredictable, beautiful, raw, and so much more. Tonight this mom showed so much strength and determination in the face of so many ups and downs. I was really proud of her.

I met this beautiful and strong momma while she was already in her “bubble,” taking each contraction as they came with strength and determination. As I entered her room I just sat quietly observing her strength, I was amazed at how aware she was of her breath. She looked at me and said hi, I quickly introduced myself and asked if she would like for me to stay and support her, I was surprised when tears filled her eyes and she said an emphatic yes. I was surprised that she said yes because from the outside she was doing so well, but during our time together I realized that the gentle reminder to relax and breathe was needed all the way until the end. And I was so glad to be the one to remind her. Her sweet little one finally made an appearance after a long, hard fight by momma! She was so proud of herself and so was I!

This week I didn’t see new life come into the world first hand, however I was encouraged I was able to support several women in different ways. Along with another doula use spinning babies to gently help a baby rotate into a better position for birth, have a long conversing a first time mom about all she was worried about, a foot massage, and a simple and quite presence that helped calm some nerves. Doula care in the hospital looks different every week and I’m thankful each week to be able to support women in any way I can.
