While season is finished for a lot of Ethiopian coffee exporters and producers, ours continues in full swing!

As we are approaching our Bette Buna planting days, our field team is running inspections at the plots of farmers who took part in our training program. Did they apply the knowledge that they learned at our demo plots? Then they could earn coupons, that can be exchanged for seedlings when the plantation days are there.

In this way we don't just reward the participation of farmers in the program, but we reward the applied knowledge!

Together with the farmers, our team and clients we grow coffee ánd communities.

Happy Women’s Day from all of us at Bette Buna! 

For us, supporting women doesn’t mean excluding men. It means building teams where everyone has a place and the same opportunity to grow.

On our farm, our team of 53 permanent staff includes both women and men working side by side. Each of them is strong in their own way. What matters most is not gender.. it’s mindset. The willingness to work, to stay committed, and to believe in long-term change.

Real change takes time. It takes people who dare to dream, who set a spot on the horizon and keep working toward it.. even when it’s hard. By changing our own lives step by step, we create space to invite others to grow with us too.

We know women’s rights and opportunities still need more attention. And yes, sometimes women have to work two or three times harder to be seen and heard. But progress won’t come from division, it comes from standing together and moving forward together.

This is not about proving women count. It’s about realizing we all count.

Most coffees are cupped in Addis, when the work by farmers and producers is already finished and the only question is what clients will buy.

Here it’s different.

Our cupping labs are in our processing room, next to the drying beds and our warehouse in Megadu and Taferi Kela. We taste while the coffee is still becoming itself. If something is off, we can still change how we process, dry, how we rest, how we blend and dehull. More than 100 day batches, each batch with the effort of our team and community farmers. As one big family.

We cup to produce and source the best coffee, yes.. but also to teach our own team and to speak honestly to our farmers: this worked, this didn’t, let’s try again.

That feedback belongs here, not months (or even not at all!) later in a city, which is not accessible for most of the farmers and producers.

Progress doesn’t come easy. It comes with the right mindset and a lot of hard work. From everyone involved in Bette Buna. This weeks we feel that more than ever.

While we're approaching the last weeks production in Megadu, in Taferi Kela our farm started flowering and the smell during the morning and evening strolls is A-MA-ZING! This is the moment where we analyse the state of our farm and plan which plots to renovate, by either stumping our replacing.

Meet our farm teams full of lions! Started a few years ago as individuals, all with their own challenhes, this group calls themselves now "family".

Together they run our seedling nursery, the farm in Taferi Kela and they co create the farm curriculum for our community farmers.

Last week our operations, sustainability and education team came together at our farm in Taferi Kela. Education is at the core of Bette Buna, so is operations. And when you blend these two with each other, ask the right questions, explore the challenges with each other and align the solutions, and do the hard work.. then you're able to make lasting opportunities for everyone along the value chain.

And that's what we call sustainability.
