✨ Light in the dark: the Anomalops katoptron ✨

We filmed the incredible flashlight fish (Anomalops katoptron) in complete darkness at De Jong Marinelife, and the result is pure magic. Beneath its eyes sits an organ packed with bioluminescent bacteria, letting this fish literally switch its own light on and off. In the wild, it uses this glow to lure prey, confuse predators, and communicate with others of its kind in the deep sea.

Unlike many species of fish which sport scales, pineapple fish like this one at De Jong Marinelife are covered in scutes, which create a h***y outer layer that is not too different from the texture of a real pineapple. Most active at night, this fish has light producing organs filled with luminescent bacteria on each side of its lower jaw. Researchers are not certain of the light’s true function, but it is suspected that it may help the fish to see at night, or to attract prey.
