Sometimes power doesn’t raise its voice. It dresses itself in calm, in openness, even in generosity. But underneath, it keeps the other small and out of sight. I recently encountered this in a response I received, and thanks to the work of Marloes Vis van Heemst on paternalistic powerplay, I could finally see it for what it was.

And as I do with all my experiences and lessons in life lately, I create with it. I give it a voice. I put it into words. So I wrote a substack about it on silence, integrity, and the polished language that hides more than it reveals.

Some spaces call us before we even know their name.
Wild Fern is such a space.

A retreat that isn’t a retreat but a sanctuary. A sanctuary that holds you and not molds you. A sanctuary that doesn’t promise answers. Just presence, nature and silence. And the kind of rest that doesn’t ask anything of you ❤️

For the space holders, the sensitive ones and the leaders walking without a map… This is a homecoming. Without a fixed structure, where nothing is demanded from you. Where you will be held in reverence. Where you can breathe and land in stillness. So you can continue you on your own path with courage.

From September 17–21, 2025, we’ll gather in the Forest of Dean in the UK. On the sacred land of ASHA, a land of trees, stillness, and deep listening.

Wild Fern opent zich.

Niet als event. Niet als retraite. Maar als een veld dat ademt.

Je hoeft je hand niet op te steken. Je weet al of je geroepen wordt.

We komen samen in het bos. Niet om iets te worden maar om te zakken. Om te herinneren en te rusten in wat al klopt.

Geen programma. Wel een ritme. Geen beloftes. Wel een vuur.

“Ze willen je rauw. Niet alleen je mooie woorden”

Wat als we in 1940 zo hadden geregeerd?

Stel je voor. Het is mei 1940. De stad brandt. De bezetter marcheert binnen. Families verdwijnen in kampen. En de minister-president zegt: “We zien jullie. We horen jullie. We werken achter de schermen aan een staakt-het-vuren met de nazi’s.”

Onvoorstelbaar?

Kijk dan nog eens goed naar hoe we als land vandaag reageren op een ander volk dat belegerd en weggevaagd wordt. Afgesneden van water, voedsel, medicijnen en een toekomst.

Een conflict ‘complex’ noemen maakt het makkelijk om weg te kijken. Maar onrecht is vaak pijnlijk simpel: wie een volk uithongert en bombardeert, heeft zijn moreel kompas verloren.

De geschiedenis herinnert zich niet de stille diplomaten. Ze herinnert zich de mensen die hun nek uitstaken, vaak tegen de stroom in. En daarom trek ik vandaag en elke dag de rode lijn.

Deze column schreef ik omdat ik geloof dat het ongemak van nu ons iets kostbaars kan teruggeven: onze waardigheid.

Een nieuwe post op Substack. Voor de stille lezer. Voor de ongelikte waarheidzoeker. Voor de maker die twijfelt. Voor de man of vrouw die voelt dat ze niet langer kunnen pleasen zonder zichzelf te verliezen. Voor hen die de maskers zat zijn. Voor wie nog niet weet waarom maar wie het wel raakt.

En elke keer als ik zelf bijna vergeet waarom, dan is dit mijn prayer:

May my work be an echo of truth,
a mirror for those brave enough to look.
May I carry discomfort without hardening,
inhabit the silence without fleeing,
and keep choosing fire.
Even when no one is watching.
May I remember why I am here.
May my path be clear,
not in light, but in direction.

En dat is precies waarom het misschien wel klopt.

Gaza. The sea. Los Angeles. All other places where it burns in Earth . Your heart.

was hijacked. Not by pirates, but by Israel, a terrorist state which commits genocide in front of our eyes. Humanitarian workers, artists, elders, kidnapped in international waters for daring to bring food, medicine, and hope to a starved people.

In LA, thousands are rising. Shouting what should be unshoutable by now: Stop the genocide. Stop the lies.

And you?
Are you still editing your posts to stay likable?
Still sipping your morning coffee in curated silence?
Still pretending neutrality is noble?

This is not politics. This is not a trend.
This is 2.3 million people trapped. Bombed. Killed. This is truth that burns and belongs in your body.

We are the transitional generation.
History is already watching.
The question is:
Will your silence curse you?
Or will your voice bless the world?
