Solar's circular economy does not start at the recycling line. It starts with the route into it.

At Intersolar South America this week, the conversation around end-of-life modules came down to a practical point: panels do not arrive in one place, at one time or in one condition. Hail and wind damage can add to the flow. Collection, inspection, regional logistics and clear decisions all need to work before material recovery can scale.

That is where GE4A starts, too. reCOGNISE establishes a module's condition. reUSE keeps suitable modules in service. reCYCLE is the responsible route when material recovery is the right outcome.

How repairable a solar module will be is decided long before it reaches a recycler: at the design table.

A new peer-reviewed study looked at a way to make PV modules easier to repair without overlooking mechanical reliability. In its laminate-free case study, the optimised design improved the authors' repairability score by 51% and reduced cost by 6%. It also added 45% more mass.

That trade-off is worth keeping in view. A module designed for repair is not automatically the better choice. It still needs to be safe, reliable and practical to handle.

Silver makes up only a small share of a solar module's weight, but it can make a real difference to recycling economics.

A University of Newcastle team has reported a continuous pilot that recovered nearly all of the silver from prepared end-of-life solar-cell material. The result is encouraging. It is also narrow: the work is a preprint, and the feed was prepared cell material rather than whole modules.

That distinction matters.

At GE4A, the first question is always the module's condition. If it can continue to operate safely, reUSE may be the better route. If it has genuinely reached end of life, reCYCLE should recover materials in useful, traceable streams.

Circularity needs both decisions: keep suitable modules in service, then recover their material value properly when they are not.

Recycling is only one part of a responsible end-of-life plan for solar modules.

The harder question is whether the route is documented. Who assessed the module? Was it tested for reuse? Where does it go next if it cannot stay in service?

Standards for PV-module handling are becoming more specific about those steps: safe handling, evaluation, testing, repair where appropriate, and a qualified downstream route.

That is close to how GE4A thinks about every returned module. We start with reCOGNISE: understand its actual condition. Then the next route can be justified — reUSE when continued service makes sense, reCYCLE when material recovery is the responsible option.

Circularity needs more than a collection point. It needs a decision that can be traced.

A steep power drop does not always mean the whole solar module has reached end of life.

A 2026 peer-reviewed study used field-deployed modules to model short-circuited bypass-diode faults. One faulty diode reduced output by roughly 34–37%. After the researchers replaced the diode with a plug-in component, power deviation fell below 3% in the single-fault cases.

The detailed experiment covered nine modules, so the numbers should not be treated as a universal repair rate. The lesson is diagnostic: a large performance loss can come from one accessible component, not the module as a whole.

Before a module enters recycling, identify the fault. If a safe, targeted repair can restore it, reUSE may be the better route. If the module has genuinely reached end of life, reCYCLE should recover its material value.

That is what reCOGNISE is for: finding the right next step from the module’s actual condition.

Some solar modules lose their chance of a second life before anyone tests them.

The EU-funded SOLMATE project reviewed more than 400 decommissioned PV modules. Reuse rates varied from roughly 55% to 91% by batch. The main constraint was not age. It was how the modules had been dismantled, packed and transported.

That changes where circularity has to begin.

A used module should be treated as a potential asset from the moment it leaves the mounting structure. Careful removal and protected transport preserve its condition. Proper testing can then determine whether reUSE is responsible or whether reCYCLE is the better route.

At GE4A, reCOGNISE provides that decision point. But no inspection system can recover reuse potential that has already been destroyed by poor handling.

A used solar module can still work and still lack a viable route back into use.

In an August 21 interview with pv magazine USA, SPR CEO Brett Henderson points to certification and interconnection barriers in the U.S. reuse market. Official R2 guidance makes an important distinction: modules need to be evaluated, tested and categorised before they can leave the controlled stream as functional products.

For GE4A, this is why reCOGNISE cannot stop at a power reading. Condition data should answer two different questions:

→ Is this module technically fit for another life?

→ Does its intended destination provide a safe and valid route back into use?

If both answers are clear, reUSE becomes credible. If they are not, reCYCLE should recover the material value through traceable downstream handling.

A working module has potential. A qualified route turns that potential into a responsible second life.

A new U.S. market survey argues that some retired solar panels described as recycled may still be landfilled, downcycled or sent abroad for final processing. Several companies named in the report dispute parts of its analysis.

That disagreement points to a practical question: what evidence follows a module after collection?

Recovery is about purity.

High recovery rates only tell part of the story. What matters next is whether the recovered glass, silicon, copper and aluminium are clean enough to return to production.

OnePlanet says its new fully mechanical PRISM process removed 99.5% of module glass at 99% purity before size reduction. In staged tests, it also produced a silicon stream above 95% purity, copper granulate at 99%, and aluminium at 99.9%. The company says the results were supported by independent third-party laboratory testing.

The announcement points to a practical shift in solar recycling. Retired panels are not simply waste by weight. They are a source of usable raw materials when each stream is separated cleanly.

Of 3,749 decommissioned solar modules, 58.1% met the study’s performance criteria for a second life. Yet around 14% of modules that passed I-V and EL screening still failed the wet-leakage safety test.

Power output matters. Electrical safety matters too.
