Are you a good writer? Take part in this essay contest on UN Security Council Reform!
Together with the Clingendael Institute, the Brazilian Instituto Igarapé, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Amsterdam Law Forum, an essay contest and a student conference on the reform of the international peace and security system and the UN Security Council has been organized.
With a world on fire and fast-emerging regions and powers facing unprecedented security challenges, nobody disputes that a great deal is at stake for the world and for the United Nations. Challenging problems arise and with it the question how to address the most pressing issues: Is the UN Security Council too old for a new world? What kind of a UN does the world need? How could the Security Council improve its performance? Or would it be better to run the world without it?
In our essay contest, we are looking for fresh ideas rather than a rehash of familiar arguments and also stimulating perspectives. This contest is not just for students of politics and law. Any discipline or field of studies could make a useful contribution. Your deadline for the essay is Friday October 17th at midnight. The essay is written in English with a maximum length of 2,000 words. Please submit electronically to: [email protected].
What is in it for you?
• The best 3 essays will be presented during the prominent student keynote session of the main expert conference on November 10th-11th and on the student conference on November 7th.
• Top-5 essays will be published in the Amsterdam Law Forum.
• The best essays will be published on the homepage of the websites of the Clingendael Institute and Igarapé.
At the student conference you will have the possibility to discuss your ideas with high-profile speakers from the field of diplomacy, academia and think tanks, as well as with fellow students. There is no requirement to write an essay to attend the conference! The conference will take place November 7th in Amsterdam.
