Mapping African HLA Diversity: High-Resolution Genotyping and Discovery of HLA-E*01:152

📅 September 9, 2026
⏲️ 12:00 CEST
📍 Online

Join us as we present two published studies from the AHRI Ndhlovu Lab, characterizing HLA variation across Eastern and Southern Africa.

➡️ The first analyzed HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-C data from 2,718 unrelated African participants from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, South Africa, and Zambia. This study showed that population-genetic analyses of allele and haplotype frequencies and Hellinger distance revealed variation between countries and ethnic groups.

➡️ The second communication identified the novel HLA-E*01:152 allele in 12 of 580 individuals genotyped across Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, and Kenya. This allele was strongly associated with HLA-A*29:11.

Why do some patients respond to immune checkpoint inhibitors and others don't?

In our latest post, we explore how a patient's HLA type may be associated with the response to immune checkpoint inhibitors.

It's the third post in our CDx blog post series on "Exploring HLA in tumors", where we previously introduced the central role of HLA molecules in tumor immunology and discussed how tumors can alter HLA pathways to evade immune detection and destruction.

In this blog post, we explore how a patient's HLA type may associate with the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors.

1,000 patients pre-screened for HLA-A for the ARTEMIA trial🥳

In collaboration with OSE Immunotherapeutics, the sponsor of the ARTEMIA trial, GenDx has reached a significant milestone: 1,000 patients have now been pre-screened using a test for high-resolution HLA-A*02 typing, which is currently under companion diagnostic development. One step closer to Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients getting new options for treatment.

Developed and validated since 2023, our assay is based on our IVDR-registered devices, NGSgo®-AmpX v2, NGSgo® Library Full Kit, and NGSengine® software. The assay is validated through an IVDR clinical performance study. It supports the pivotal phase 3 ARTEMIA clinical trial of Tedopi®, an HLA-restricted epitope-based cancer vaccine, for second-line treatment of NSCLC patients with secondary resistance to Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICI).

When time is critical, your HLA amplification step should be fast, precise, and simple.
That is exactly what our team had in mind when developing NGSgo®-ProntoAmp.

By combining pre-mixed primers and enzymes, we've simplified the setup; all you need to do is add DNA.

Compatible with both Illumina (via NGSgo® Library Full Kit) and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (via NGS-Pronto®Prep) sequencing platforms.

How reliable is NGSgo®-ProntoAmp? The results in 3 external clinical labs speak for themselves.

In a recent study, NGSgo®-ProntoAmp delivered high-quality HLA typing results from both blood and buccal swab samples, validated on Illumina and Oxford Nanopore Technologies platforms.

The numbers:
🔹 80 human gDNA samples typed
🔹 99.7% - 100% concordance

When does the immune system, meant to protect us, start helping tumors hide?

HLA molecules are far more than transplant biomarkers. Tumors can hijack HLA biology to evade immune surveillance and create an immunosuppressive microenvironment.

Our latest blog explores how classical and non-classical HLA pathways contribute to immune escape and why these same pathways are emerging as promising therapeutic targets.

Participants from 24 countries. 15 different sports. Athletes ranging in age from 8 to 80 years old.

They all come together to celebrate what it means to have received the "Gift of Life." The European Transplant Games 2026 event highlights the importance of transplantation and sport as a way of life.

Hosted in Arnhem, the Netherlands, from June 21 to 27, it brings together athletes, organ and stem cell transplant recipients, and people undergoing dialysis, together with their families.

Every athlete competing in games is a reminder of why precision in transplantation matters. We are honored to support this year's European Transplant Games.
