One thing that surprises expats in the Netherlands is how much emergency preparedness runs quietly in the background of everyday life. Meaning that living here is VERY safe for you and your family.
🇳🇱 The Netherlands is a NATO member. Under NATO’s Article 5, an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all, with every Ally obliged to assist.
🚨 Those sirens at 12:00 on the first Monday of every month aren’t a tradition - they’re the nationwide public warning system being tested. All 4,278 sirens across the country are checked, covering not just military threats but any large-scale hazard, from floods to chemical incidents.
📱 NL-Alert sends emergency instructions directly to phones in affected areas. The system is always tested too.
🛡️ Defence is a budgeted national priority, not just a talking point. At the June 2025 NATO summit, the Netherlands committed to raising defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2032 - 3.5% on core military capability, 1.5% on broader resilience and infrastructure.
Very few countries test their safety systems this regularly and protect like this.
