We know there’s a difference between a positive mindset and a negative one. And we all probably prefer optimism over pessimism. Some of us might even agree on the crucial role mindset plays in determining how successful your life feels – or doesn’t feel.
As though we were in a choir eagerly nodding our heads as we read these words and passionately singing amen, most of us will go through our days without paying any attention whatsoever to our thoughts. That’s because the vast majority of people simply don’t know HOW to cultivate a positive mindset, or one of success, abundance, happiness or well-being.
The key to mastering your mindset is KNOWing that it’s an active process that must be practiced every single day. Just like you can’t get bigger biceps by sitting on the couch knowing you should lift weights, you can’t train your mind to focus on what you want or how you want your life to be.
Start your day by warming up your mind, which is done by becoming aware of the way you feel. Set your intention first thing in the morning to pay attention to the way you feel. When you know how you feel, you know whether your thoughts are focused on life-affirming thoughts or self-defeating ones. Feeling bad is nature’s way of telling you’re thinking thoughts of worry, anxiety, guilt, shame, insecurity, doubt, anger, frustration, irritation, blame, defensiveness. In other words: you’re thinking bad-feeling thoughts.
As intricate, powerful and awesome the human mind is, it can only think one thought at a time. You simply can’t feel good when you’re thinking a bad-feeling thought. Alternately, when you’re appreciating the things you’ve already created in your life (family, friends, money in your pocket, a roof over your head, food on your plate) you can’t feel bad. The best part is that you can plug into appreciation At. Any. Time. My Aunt Alice told me once that it’s impossible for her to feel sad when she’s eating something sweet. It really is up to you. Choose to let appreciation be your sweet.
