💧 1.5 million litres of water saved. £4,885 less spent.

That’s the impact of data-driven pitch management at Port Vale F.C.

The new TurfPod is rebuilt from the ground up, based on extensive feedback fom the grounds teams who use it every day.

At Vale Park, Head Groundsman Steven Alderson is using SGL TurfPods and TurfBase Sports to make smarter irrigation decisions based on real-time soil moisture data.

The result?
💧 1.5+ million litres of water saved in just six months
💷 £4,885 less spent on water compared to last year
🌱 Better-informed irrigation decisions based on what the pitch actually needs

And the numbers are not the only change.

During a recent ten-day dry spell, the team skipped five full irrigation cycles because the data showed that the soil still had enough moisture.

Instead of watering because the schedule says so, Steven can now water when the pitch actually needs it.

“It’s changed how we work completely. We’re saving resources, improving quality, and building the case for future investment.”

The TurfPods have already paid for themselves. And for Port Vale, this is just the start.

Last week, we brought the SGL team together in Breda for our Strategy & Success Event.

It was a good moment to take a step back from the day-to-day work and spend some time on our strategy, our priorities and what we want to achieve together in the coming period.

But of course, it wasn’t all meetings and presentations.

We also had plenty of time to catch up with colleagues, enjoy a boat trip, play some competitive games and finish the day with dinner together.

With colleagues working across different teams and countries, moments like these are very valuable. You get to know each other outside of the usual work setting, share ideas you might not discuss in a meeting and simply have a good time together.

A great couple of days with the SGL team. Thanks everyone for the energy, ideas and good times.

A new NFL season is here, but what’s underneath the players’ feet? 🏈🌱

This summer, seven NFL stadiums temporarily swapped artificial turf for natural grass to host the FIFA World Cup.

Now the NFL season is starting again.

And in stadiums such as MetLife Stadium, SoFi Stadium, Lumen Field and Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the temporary grass pitches are making way for artificial turf once again.

So, across the NFL, what is the split?
🌱 16 stadiums play on natural grass.
🟩 14 play on artificial turf.

The World Cup showed that even stadiums built around artificial turf can be transformed into high-level natural grass venues. But keeping a pitch performing at the highest level is about much more than simply choosing grass or turf.

It takes planning, expertise and a dedicated grounds team behind the scenes.

As the new NFL season gets underway, we wish all grounds managers and their teams a great season ahead. 👏

Tayomara leads Gensler’s Sports practice across Europe. As an architect and urban planner, she works with clubs, cities, owners and investors on the venues, entertainment districts and sporting infrastructure that shape how people experience sport.

Her international track record spans Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas, including venues and infrastructure for the Olympic Games, the FIFA World Cup and the Pan American Games.
