Thank you for a great event in Bergen at the Catch Welfare Platform conference!

Our Head of Precision Fishing, Tom Rossiter had the opportunity to dive deeper into technologies available to fishermen. This includes the current research being carried out using the cameras and the groundbreaking insights gained with its underwater footage.

Leading up to the event we also had the chance to record a podcast with Oliver McBride from The Fishing Daily about ➡️Listen to the episode here: https://bit.ly/3SFepDS

It was a pleasure chatting with you all at the event and demonstrating how the camera can be easily implemented into operations.

The Catch Welfare Platform (CWP) will provide a world-wide network of multi-disciplinary teams with the resources to tackle critical challenges in transitioning global fisheries towards welfare conscious fishing practices.
These challenges include: characterising the hazards facing animals during capture; defining the scientific principles and tools for implementing good catch welfare; understanding the technical and socio-economic barriers to introducing welfare conscious fishing practices; and facilitating a better understanding of the benefits of good catch welfare amongst stakeholders and wider society through effective communication and education.
The transition will be focused on fishing practices that promote good catch welfare, i.e. capture and handling methods that minimise physical damage to, and the allostatic load* on, the animals in the catch. We consider such practices to be welfare conscious and anticipate that teleost fish will initially receive most attention.
To expedite the transition in world fisheries the active participation of seafood-related industries (esp. fishers) in the CWP project is key. One of the key tasks is assessing how fishers can be provided with an incentive, e.g. valorisation of seafood products with good catch welfare standards.
The management team consists of Wageningen Livestock Research (coordination), Institute of Marine Research, Nofima. Michelle Boonstra Consultancy will take care of the project management.
