Phenomenal order intake for Norwegian SHP specialist Energi Teknikk
Seven new orders, including the company’s largest single contract, has really put spin on the company’s turbine wheels during the start of 2017.
In 2016, Energi Teknikk – one of Norway’s leading total suppliers of equipment and services for the construction of small hydro power plants (SHPs) – had a turnover of 60 MNOK. The company, located in Rosendal by the scenic Hardanger fjord in western Norway, did believe in growth in 2017. But the beginning of the year surely has surpassed all expectations.
Since end of 2016, Energi Teknikk has signed contracts for the supply of complete turbine plants to five Norwegian SHPs, and the company is expecting to sign another two contracts shortly. The delivery to Vaksvik power plant in mid-Norway is the largest single contract in Energi Teknikk’s almost 20 years’ longevity.
Way in front of schedule
“Record contract are always nice, but for us it is total order intake that gives greatest cause for celebration. With new contracts for around 70 million we have reached our budget target for 2017 within the first two months, and the orders heighten our activity by 50 percent compared to last year,” says Arild Klette Steinsvik, CEO of Energi Teknikk.
He is quite surprised, but mostly proud of what the SHP specialist has achieved.
“We are now well employed far into 2018, safeguarding local workplaces and providing activity for our subcontractors. It is also extra gratifying to see that half of the contracts have been signed with existing customers. That these have renewed their confidence in us, shows that we have a robust organization – providing products and services of high quality at competitive terms,” says Steinsvik.
A competence centre for small hydro power technology
The CEO points to several factors that have been decisive for the upturn in 2017: A general upturn in the market, the effect of the company’s long-term and targeted relationship work toward developers of small hydro power plants, as well as increased respect among customers for the competence centre Energi Teknikk has established in Rosendal.
“This competence centre represents our collective knowledge and experience from 150 delivered installations through two decades. Here we have built up cutting edge expertise in both construction and operation of small hydro power plants. We have developed our own turbine design and control system, and have gained solid experience in calculations and flow optimization. That the company as a total supplier also can offer excellent services, including a 24/7 telephone service, provide extra value for our customers,” Steinsvik says.
He also believes that last year's change of company ownership and following organizational changes has contributed to strengthen Energi Teknikk’s position in the market.
“For years, the company had financial owners based in eastern Norway. Last autumn, the founder of Energi Teknikk, Eivind Tvedt, gathered a local constellation of investors which bought 82 percent of the shares in the company. Since then we have received a lot of positive feedback on the transition to a more locally anchored ownership with closer ties to the running operation of the company, and we are perceived as a safer and more solid business partner. That we also aligned our organisation and management to become more robust when executing our projects, has also gained positive attention among our customers,” says Steinsvik.
Pushing forward, at home and abroad
Further into 2017, the work of 15 persons strong Energi Teknikk will mainly focus on fulfilling customers’ expectations of both products and services.
“In addition, we will of course also hunt new projects, to fill our order book with activity also in the latter part of 2018, 2019 and 2020. In our sales effort, we’ll be looking for projects both in Norway and abroad,” the managing director says, adding that he plans to strengthen staff furtherly in 2017.
Previously, Energi Teknikk has delivered two turbine plants for small hydro power stations in Romania, as well as one plant to Macedonian customers.
“We are still targeting the international market, but acknowledge that we have a slightly longer way to go abroad than in our home market. The company is aiming primarily at projects in the Balkan region, as the topography is quite similar to what we have in Norway and a great potential for small hydro power plants,” Arild Klette Steinsvik explains.
