A “please recycle” sign rarely changes behaviour on its own. Systems do.

In Aldar’s 2024 Sustainability Report (Circular Economy section – p.39), Aldar highlights how they introduced Cycled’s AI-powered waste sorting and recycling stations to make recycling simple, consistent, and rewarding.

Residents and visitors drop recyclables at their convenience and instantly earn points redeemable for shopping vouchers.

The stations were first deployed in 2023 across Aldar retail assets including World Trade Center, Yas Mall, and Al Jimi Mall. Since launch, the programme has already facilitated the recycling of over 2 million plastic bottles in 2023 alone — with that number steadily growing year on year.

From retail environments, the initiative expanded into community living with a pilot in Al Ghadeer Community in December 2024 — proving that when recycling is embedded into daily life, participation scales.

For years, we relied on big numbers to judge success. Full bins. Tonnes collected. General estimates. Useful, yes, but they rarely showed who was involved or what materials were actually being recovered.

In our latest article for the Cycled blog, we look at smart recycling units as a kind of sensor network.

On the outside, a Reviver unit just looks like a place to return bottles and cans. On the inside, it quietly records what comes through, when it happens and where it happens, so cities, malls and campuses can plan collections better, run smarter engagement and make a stronger case for climate and circular funding.

As the dust from COP30 settles, the work now is to turn those high-level discussions on science, data and AI into decisions people can actually feel in their shared spaces. That starts in very ordinary places: next to supermarket entrances, in staff housing corridors, on university campuses.

WFES 2026 is around the corner and we’ll be there.

Cycled Technologies is exhibiting at the **World Future Energy Summit**, happening **13–15 January in Abu Dhabi**. You’ll find us at the **FUSE AI Pavilion**, **Stand AI04**.

We’ll be showcasing how our circular economy solutions are evolving, including a preview of some of the new AI capabilities we’ve been working on to improve how recycling systems are monitored, managed and scaled. Practical tools, real-world use cases, and honest conversations about what works.
