Rope threads on hoist drums often require two separate threads to start on a common centerline.

Getting this 100% right by doing two independent threading operations often involves trial and error.

With this new feature in ThreadTracer, you can control the toolpath for multiple threads with geometry.
Tool will now start from a single point and trails along a controlled path that can engage the part in multiple locations.

Doing both lefthand and righthand threads as a single continuous toolpath ensures that the tool and spindle are perfectly in sync during machining.

With the very accurate machine and tool simulation in GibbsCAM, trial and error are completely eliminated.

The customer threaded this whole hoist drum with a single 0.315" (8mm) grooving tool and the threads were spot on centerline.

New updated version of ThreadTracer for GibbsCAM :

This update contains several new features to simplify programming of custom threads or helical grooves and machine with standard turning tools.

- New Advanced Entry & Retract feature which enables more solutions for complex thread setups. Machine any thread defined in ThreadTracer behind a feature or around an obstacle on your part.
- New tool settings to orient tools properly for vertical lathe setups (VTL MDD).
- WorkGroups created by ThreadTracer contain info to better support multiple thread features on the same part.
- Support for multiple synchronized thread surfaces within the same thread operation, for example, a perfectly mirrored lefthand and righthand thread on a cable drum.
- Uses the new WG category feature introduced in GibbsCAM 2023 for keeping your WG list tidy.

Problems on breaking chips when machining large or custom threads?
Applying a chipbreaker to the threading toolpath can solve this.
This is a 4-TPI thread machined with a 2mm grooving insert.

These generated sine waves have Hz based on threadpitch and the result is similar to Sandvik's new threading method, to break the strings when machining. GibbsCAM supports threading along selected geometry out of the box.

As you might know, the rover on Mars rolls around with wheels made with GibbsCAM.
And Norwegian company Devico AS has for over 30 years developed technology for deep borehole surveying, reaching several kilometers down into the earth with pinpoint accuracy.
