Today is Asar 15, the National Paddy Day which is Plantation Day. It is celebrated as the Ropai Jatra along with Paddy Day in the middle of Asar, which is considered to be the month of sowing muri. Nowadays, along with planting paddy in the field, people are entertained by spreading mud among themselves and eating Dhai Chura.
Farmers who are tired of the hassle of work believe that yoghurt and chura give them strength and coolness. Apart from farming, those who have other professions and businesses also celebrate the 15th of Asar by eating curd chura today. Nepal has been celebrating Asar 15 as Paddy Day since 2062 BS. A special planting festival is being held in Kaski on the occasion of Paddy Day. Paddy is the major food crop of Nepal. Rice has contributed 7 percent of the total domestic production, 20 percent to agriculture and 55 percent to the total food production. According to the Department of Agriculture, 4.7 million metric tons of paddy is produced in about 1.4 million hectares of land in Nepal. About 70 percent of the land is planted in the Terai, 26 percent in the hilly areas and 4 percent in the mountainous areas. According to the Department of Agriculture, paddy production declined by 10 percent last year. Experts say that the migration of young manpower, land in the hands of a limited number of people, subdivision of land, conversion of arable land into plots, dependence on sky farming, lack of irrigation system, improved varieties of seeds and lack of proper provision of fertilizers and subsidies have affected paddy production. If farmers have access to improved varieties of paddy seeds, paddy production can be increased up to 20 percent. At present, Nepal's paddy productivity is 3.17 metric tons per hectare. And the attention of the concerned parties have not able to go this way.
