Ratha-yatra and. Back to temple after 7 days.....

This marks the annual journey of Lord Jagannath (meaning - the lord of the world) and his siblings take to their aunt’s place to Gundicha temple.

The primary festivity takes place in Puri, Odisha – which visited decades. The visit reminded me why Jagannath always remained a personal favorite. I think his unique look - wide eyes, simple built in neem wood all adds to the charm. The idols slightly incomplete, perhaps makes us more forgiving about our own and others shortcomings.

When I visited Puri , the 40+ ft (13+ m) high chariots/ratha were being created without any power tools! As stood glued watching, a chariot maker gave me a piece of wood that was chipped off. . It’s not hard since Lord Jagannath prefers simple and seasonal preparations.

Dolphins only sleep with half of their brain at a time:

Dolphins have an extraordinary way of sleeping that sets them apart from most other animals. Unlike humans, who fully shut down our brains for rest, dolphins only "sleep" with half of their brain at a time.

This phenomenon is known as unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, and it allows them to remain partially conscious while still getting the rest they need.

Here’s how it works:

While one half of the dolphin's brain enters a deep, restful state, the other half stays awake and alert. This keeps them aware of their surroundings, allowing them to continue swimming, maintain social interactions, and, most importantly, surface for air, since they are conscious breathers. After a period of time, the active half of the brain will switch, letting the other side rest.

This unique adaptation is essential for their survival, as it allows dolphins to avoid predators and maintain vital bodily functions, all while still getting the sleep they need. In the vast, open

"Problem: A new-born animal is not breathing.

Some new-born animals are very weak, especially after a difficult birth. They often have much fluid in their lungs that stops them breathing normally.

So after parturation you have to do these

1. If the baby is having difficulty breathing, hang it upside down. Rub the chest to make
any fluid in the lungs come out of the nose.

2. Lift the new-born animal up by the back
legs for a minute or so to let mucus and
fluid drain out from the lungs. You can
hold the back legs of a small animal
and swing it round to make mucus
come out of the nose.

3. Put the new-born animal over the back
of its mother with its head down to
help fluid drain out from the lungs.

4. Put a piece of dry grass up the baby
animal's nose. This makes it cough then
it starts breathing.

5. Make sure the baby animal sucks its
mother's teat as soon as possible. When
the mother feels a baby sucking, her
brain releases a hormone called oxytocin
into her blood that makes milk flow
from the udder. It also makes the uterus
contract and push the placenta out."

The Three Forms of Knowledge

There are three forms of knowledge. The first is intellectual knowledge, which is in fact only information and the collection of facts, and the use of these to arrive at further intellectual concepts. This is intellectualism.

Second comes the knowledge of states, which included both emotional feeling and strange states of being in which man thinks that he has perceived something supreme but cannot avail himself of it. This is emotionalism.

Third comes real knowledge, which is called the Knowledge of Reality. In this form, man can perceive what is right, what is true, beyond the boundaries of thought and sense. Scholastics and scientists concentrate upon the first form of knowledge. Emotionalists and experientialists use the second form. Others use the two combined, or either one alternatively.

But the people who attain to truth are those who know how to connect themselves with the reality which lies beyond both these forms of knowledge. These are the real Sufis, the Dervishes who have Attained.

SUMMER STRESS IN LIVESTOCK AND STRATEGIES TO PREVENT IT
□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇

What is Summer stress in livestock
□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□□
It is a condition in which thermoregulatory mechanisms of livestock are unable to adjust with the high environmental climate during summer months.

How summer stress occur
□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■

Livestock such as cattle and poultry, use metabolic heat to maintain a stable internal temperature, often one different from the environment.Livestock have their own adaptation methods, which are the characteristics developed by the natural selections which help them to maintain their healthy body temperature.

the critical situation occur during summer months like

high atmospheric temperature
High relative humidity

insufficient air circulation

lead to a situation in which livestock not able to apply the adaption methods, and adjust the thermoregulatory mechanism to over come the summer stress.

Factors contribute to summer stress in Livestock:
□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■

1.Livestock shed

2.floor space

3.ventilation

4.fodder and feed availablity

5.water

6.breed character

7.local climate

1.livestock shed:
□■□■□■□■

Shed structure play a vital role in increasing the summer stress.Roof height and quality of roof play a vital role in summer stress.Livestock shed structure must be constructed according to the need of the livestock maintained.Proper roof height is essential for the good airflow. Roof materials selection must be based on the local climate and level of rain fall.
Standards of livestock shed:
****************************************************
Cattle:
Height-12 feet
Width-3.80 to 4.25 metres (single row system)7.90 to 8.70 metres (double row system)
Sheep and goat:
Height of ewe 2.5 meter
Height at ridge 3.5 meter
Breadth of shelter is 8 meter.Height of chain link used for open space -4 feet.No Restriction for length of shelter.
Poultry:
Shed height at centre 10 to 12 feet and heights of sides from foundation to roof line should be 6 to 7 feet.
Width:The open sided poultry houses in tropical countries should have a width not more than 22 to 25 feet in order to allow ample ventilation.
The side wall should be of 1 to 1.5 feet height.
Gable type of roof ststem preferred in tropical countries.
Pigs:Roof height should be 8 to 10 feet.
Side walls of the sheds should be 4 to 5 feet.

Ventilation:
□■□■□■
Good ventilation is essential for the livestock shed.It will allow the sufficient air flow in and out of the livestock shed.Improper ventilation in the livestock shed lead to summer stress in livestock.
Ventilation standards:
-----------------------------------
A wind velocity of 0.2m/s
is generally regarded as a minimum requirement, but it can be increased to 1.0m/s when the temperature is nearing the upper critical,or more when it goes beyond that.

Floor space requirement:
□■□■□■□■□■□□
Proper floor space allotment is essential for the health and productivity of livestock.
Insufficient floor space allotment lead to summer stress and production loss in livestock farms.
Standard floor space requirement for livestock:
Cattle:covered area-3.5 sq.m,open area-7.0sq.m
Sheep and goat:
6 to 12 month age-
Covered area-1.0 sq.m
Open space 2.0 sq.m
Adult sheep-1.5 sq.m covered space and 3.0 sq.m open space.
Male, pregnant or lactating ewe-2sq.m covered space and 4 sq.m open space.
Poultry:
Egg type chicken
---------------------------
0-8 weeks-0.60 sq.ft in deep litter and cages .20 sq.ft.
9 to 18 weeks-in deep litre system 1.25 sq.ft and in cage system 0.30 sq.ft
For above 18 weeks-1.50 sq.ft in deep litter 0.50 in cage system.
Meat type chicken
-----------------------------
Age 0-4 weeks 0.30 sq.ft
In deep litter
For 4 to 8 weeks-0.75 sq.ft in deep litter
Pigs:
Weaner- cover area 10 to 15 sq.ft open space 15 -20 sq.ft.
Grower-cover area 12 to 20 sq.ft and open space 20-30sq.ft
Lactating sow-cover area 70-100 sq.ft open space 70 to 100 sq.ft
Boar-cover area 35 to 50 sq.ft and open space 50-70 sq.ft
Fodder and feed availability:
□■□■□■□■□
Fodder and feed scarcity during summer months lead to summer stress.Provision of insufficient green grass and dry fodder during summer months lead to summer stress in cattle sheep and goat.Provision of high concentrate feed during summer months also lead to summer stress.Insufficient grass in grazing area predispose to summer stress in sheep and goat.
Feed which generate more heat in body predispose to summer stress in poultry.
Water:
□■□■□
Most of the livestock consume more water during summer months.During the peak of the summer water requirement for livestock doubled the requirement of winter. So insufficient water provision to livestock during summer months predispose to summer stress.
Breed characteristics:
□■□■□■□■□■□
Livestock native to a particular area well adopted to the climate of the area and able to adjust with the summer stress.Where as high breed livestock not able to adopt to the climatic fluctuations when Reared in a different climatic zone, more prone to summer stress.
Local climate:
□■□■□■□■
Temperature:
For most livestock a mean daily temperature in the range 10 to 20'C is referred to as the comfort zone.In this range the animal's heat exchange can be regulated solely by physical means such as constriction and dilatation of blood vessels in the skin, rufflung up of fur or feathers and regulation of the evaporation from lungs and skin.At the upper critical temperature the physical regulation will not be sufficient to maintain a constant body temperature and animal increase its metabolic heat production and if temperature go beyond 27'C summer stress start to appear in livestock.
When local climate if temperature is between 27'C to 30'C summer stress will start. And if temperature reached 35 to 45 'C visible signs of summer stress appear.
Humidity:
Poultry do not have sweat glands, so all evaporative heat loss must originate from the respiratory tract. Other livestock species have varying abilities to sweat.
In hot dry climate evaporation is rapid, but in hot humid climate the ability of the air to absorb additional moisture is limited and inadequate cooling may result in summer stress.Too low humidity in the air will cause irritation of the mucus membranes, while too high humidity may promote growth of fungus infections. High humidity may also contribute to decay in structures. If possible keep the relative humidity in the range between 40 to 80.

Symptoms of summer stress in livestock:
□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■
Normal body temperature of different livestock:
Dairy cow:38.0-39.3 'c
Beef cow:36.7-39.1'c
Pig:38.7 -39.8
Sheep:38.3-39.9
Goat:38.7-40.7
Chicken:40.6-43.0
According to livestock metabolic standard body temperature, livestock show different types of symptoms.
Cattle:
Due to the more body surface area summer stress symptoms were prominent in dairy cattle.
Highbody temperature, panting, salivation, enteritis, acidosis, loss of milk yield and downer cow syndrome in full term pregnant cow and fresh cows.
Sheep and goat:
Enteritis,acidosis,weight loss,panting,hair loss and abortion.
Poultry:
Frequent death of birds, high chick mortality, loss of egg production, panting, off feed, starvation and death.
Pigs:
Reduced feed intake,more intake of water,enteritis,weight loss,abortion.
Strategies to control Heat stress in livestock:
□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■

Cattle:
Provision of proper floor space,Roof materials according to climatic zone.Provision of fodder and feed suitable to the local climate.Provision of sufficient cool fresh water.
Management technics for cattle:
Milk once per day.Milking at 12 hours interval at morning 6am and evening 6pm.Provision of fan per rhree cows.Provision of cooling system like water sprinklers. Culling of poor body score cattle before summer months.
Providing sodabicarb 10to 25 grams per day, mineral mixture 30 to 50 grams per day and probiotics powder 25 to 50 grams per day may be provide as a preventive medication to cattle with summer stress.Herbal preparation like Restobal tonic 50ml per day for 10 days privide good relief to summer stress.
Sheep and goat:
Managing the grazing time. Prevent the grazing between 12noon to 4pm.Provide water 4 times per day instead of 2 times.Culling of poor weight gained sheep and goat prior to summer months.Providing soda bicarbonate 5 grams with 5grams probiotic powder and 5 grams mineral mixture once daily, reduce the summer stress in sheep and goat.
Poultry:
Proper ventilation during day time.change of grazing time for native chicken.Provision of feed suitable to the hot summer. Arrangements around poultry shed to prevent summer stress.Selection of poultry breeds according to climatic zone.Providing anti heat stress powder with combination of sodabicarb, mineral mixture and probiotics, provide good results in reducing the heat stress in poultry.
Pigs:
Suitable breed selection is very important to aviod summer stress.Sellings of pigs before summer peak temperature.Provision of feed suitable to summer months.Culling of poor weight gained pigs before summer months.

□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□◇□
Due to global warming increase in summer temperature, increase in summer duration, reduced rainfall and heavy rainfall in short duration of days observed for past one decade.
Reasons for increasing summer temperature:
1.Deforestation
2.destruction of trees and natural vegetation
3.Development of more Industries which pollute the natural waterways and water resources lead to imbalance in ecosystems.
Preserve the natural resources for future generations. EXPLOITATION OF NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS FOR THE SHORT TERM BENEFITS,WILL HAVE LONG TIME NEGATIVE EFFECT ON PEACEFUL LIVING OF FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Sarcopenia affects many millions of elderly people each year, but you don’t have to become one of them. By combating it with good diet, exercise, and lifestyle habits, you can age with confidence and strength.

Resistance exercise in particular has been shown to be effective at slowing age-related muscle loss. RT puts stress on your muscles; your body responds by telling those muscles to grow bigger and stronger, which, of course, is the exact opposite of what sarcopenia does. That’s why RT is one of the best ways to counteract age-related muscle loss.

Walking is absolutely the most underrated form of movement ever. Walking is a free and simple activity that anyone can do, and studies have shown that people who walk regularly are less likely to develop sarcopenia—not to mention have a better overall quality of life.

Protein is the building block of muscle tissue, and if you’re losing muscle mass, that can indicate you’re not getting enough protein in your diet. Of course, eating more pasture-raised and grass-fed meat is the obvious way to increase protein consumption, but there are plenty of other protein-rich foods too: nuts, seeds, beans, eggs, and tofu, just to name a few.

Antioxidants help reduce the number of free radicals in your body, which reduces inflammation and prevents oxidative stress, both of which can lower your chances of developing sarcopenia. Be sure to eat plenty of foods high in antioxidants and especially carotenoids (like spinach, carrots, and bell peppers) and flavonoids (blackberries, kale, and citrus fruits, for example).

Your body needs vitamin D for maintaining bone density and absorbing calcium. But it also plays an important metabolic role in muscle health, and increased vitamin D has been linked to increases in muscle mass. It’s even anti-inflammatory.

Karpooravalli - is often called ajwain plant even though it has nothing to do with caraway or ajwain. People also associate the aroma with oregano, while it is not related to oregano either. In fact, it belongs to the same family as tulsi or basil.

There is no particular agreement among experts where exactly it originated but most likely it had a simultaneous occurrence in South Asia, including India, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Irrespective of origin - this perennial herb is currently found across the globe in warmer climates/season. Hence the common names such as Mexican-mint or Cuban oregano. There is a bit of confusion about its scientific naming as well. Until recently it used to be called Coleus aromaticus, then Plectranthus amboinicus and now Coleus ambonicas.

Whatever name it is called by, the plant is very popular across its range for cooking. In the Indian subcontinent all leading natural medicines Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani all use the plant for its various medicinal properties.

This phytochemical rich plant is - a good source of Vitamin A, C, and Omega-6 fatty acids. Rich in antioxidants, the plant is also antibacterial and antifungal. The leaves or plant extracts can treat urinary diseases, gastrointestinal health, cough and cold, epilepsy etc. It is added in soup as greens or added as spice for its aroma in several countries. In India it is either eaten raw, as a chutney, or fried.

The plant need not be taken during pregnancy but it can help ease labor pain, including menstrual pains.

Phirni : Just a plain simple - mildly sweet preparation with aeromatic rice like Basmati or Gobindobhog and milk. Often with or more dry fruits, and/or rose water added to it.

Usually prepared, set, and served in earthen pots. It is somewhere between kheer and payash (payasa), a simpler version - but delightfully fragrant and satisfying.

This version, popular in Odisha, probably yet another culinary tradtion that came to the city via Wajid Ali Shah the last King of Awadh/Oudh (For those who are cinephiles : the nawab depicted in Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khilari - The Chess Players). But where fod they get it?

The origin of the Phirini is also still shrouded in mystery. Other than in Odisha also West Bengal, different versions are found in Punjab, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.
While some experts thinks its origin is South Asia/India, others think that it has come a long way from Persia or Arabia. In Iran, there is something similar one called Fereni while in Egypt and Turkey it is called Muhallabia. A version had reached Europe in the 17th century - in Rome where it was used to treat stomach/digestion problems.

It was found that in Persia where Phirini is believed to have originated used the creamy rice pudding as the food of angels and was known as Sheer Birinj. It was first offered to Prophet Muhammad when he soared to 7th floor of heaven to meet God.

The dish is rich in Vitamin A and calcium, which keep the body and bones healthy. Easy to digest it also soothes any burning sensation stomach. It' is healthy and yummy for people of any age!
