🇦🇺 AUSTRALIA STUDENT VISA UPDATE | EFFECTIVE 2 OCTOBER 2026
Important changes have come into effect for Student Visa (Subclass 500) applications, further student visa applications, and the inclusion of family members.
If you are currently in Australia, planning to apply for another Student visa, or considering bringing your partner or children, these changes may affect your plans.
🔎 KEY CHANGES
1️⃣ Onshore Student Visa Applications
Most temporary visa holders can no longer apply for a Student visa while in Australia. Limited exemptions apply to specific categories, including certain school and PhD students and students affected by provider default or course deferral.
2️⃣ Further Student Visa Applications
Current Student visa holders applying for another Student visa in Australia must demonstrate genuine course progression, subject to applicable exemptions.
3️⃣ Family Member Inclusion
Student visa applicants can generally no longer include partners or dependent children unless a specific exemption applies. Importantly, subsequent entrants can no longer be added after the Student visa is granted.
Limited exemptions include certain PhD students, government-sponsored students, eligible scholarship recipients, and eligible students from Pacific and ASEAN countries.
4️⃣ Provider Transfer Rules
From 2 October 2026 to 30 June 2027, most non-school students must generally remain with their principal course provider for 12 months before transferring, subject to specified exceptions.
From 1 July 2027, a new Student visa transfer stream will apply to eligible students changing providers.
📌 These changes may have a significant impact on your study and family plans. Always check the rules that apply to your individual circumstances before making visa or study decisions.
