Mani Rimdu tells a story in dance. Ostensibly the dancers reenact the establishment of Buddhism in Tibet. Yet hidden within this drama of cultural history, say many Sherpas, is the story of an individual’s awakening. The dance festival is public performance.
Culminating in a public festival lasting for three days. It is an opportunity for Sherpa and Tibetans Buddhist to gather and celebrate together with the monastic community. Mani Rimdu takes place from the first day of the tenth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, falling between mid-October and mid-November. It lasts until the nineteenth day of the month. From the beginning until the end of the festival, 24-hour pujas (rituals) are performed by the monks to consecrate the Mandala, the Mani Rilwu Pills (sacred pills), the Tshereel (pills for long life) and the Torma.

The traditional dance is staged in the Kartik Dabali (a traditional stage) in Patan Durbar Square, Lalitpur.

King Siddhi Narsingh Malla is credited to have started the dance drama during his reign about 380 years ago. It is believed that the dance drama was performed to impart moral lessons to his subjects through entertainment.

The dance honours the god Kartikeya and was born out of Malla's love for the arts. Told day after day in an episodic format, the dance acts out the tales of the Shreemad Bhagavad Geeta and the Swasthani, two principal Hindu texts. The dance is a moral tale, a classic story of good triumphing over evil.

The duration of the play has changed often—first being lengthened to a full lunar month, then shortened to a week due to budget concerns more recently.

On the final day, the Narasimha avatar of God Vishnu slaying the demon was depicted in the dance drama.

Today is the last day to witness this amazing festival.

The “Gaan Pyakhan” is staged in the royal court of Mul Chowk, inside Patan Durbar Square, Kartik Dabali and Nakabail Tol.
“Gaan” translates from Nepal Bhasa as “Group” and “Pyakhan” translates to “dance”. The dance begins from the night of Ghatasthapana and is brought to a close during the night of Ekadashi.
It is believed that the dance of Asta Matrikas is performed to remove various obstacles—the eight great fears (Water, Lions, Fire, Snakes, Elephants, Thieves, False Imprisonment and Ghosts). The worship of the deities is thought to bring prosperity and fortune to the king and his people.
Times have changed since the inception of the Gaan Pyakhan; the Malla kings were overthrown by the Shah's but the tradition still continued.

In Ligligkot it was decided that whoever won the race from Chepeghat to the Ligligkot top will be the king for next year (however some historians deny it and say that the start point was from Chorkate the other side of the Chepeghat. | The Race That Decides the King of a Region |

The race would be organized every Dashain Tika day. Only Ghale origin would be able to participate in this race. The race was started in 1604 BS. The race were always won by the local Ghales. In 1616 BS, Drabya Shah, brother of then King Narbhupal Shah of Lamjung district became friends with Ghale and tricked them to drink lots of liquor and killed Ghale's King. Since then, the Shah dynasty was established in the Ligligkot kingdom and his descendants established the Gorkha kingdom and one of the Shah descendant Prithvi Narayan Shah established Nepal winning small kingdoms scattered around the Gorkha district.

There have been different stories regarding the history of Ligligkot kingdom. The widely accepted notion states that after the death of Yakshya Malla, the Gorkha kingdom was under Palpa's King Mukunda Sen. After the demise of King Mukunda Sen their sons couldn't control their big kingdom resulting the small kingdoms in Gorkha with the respective administrators being the kings.
