Nepali Roots e.V. and RIBB (Research Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology) signed an MoU at the Nepal-EU STEM Conference 2026 in Tübingen, strengthening our shared commitment to connecting the Nepali scientific diaspora and creating meaningful opportunities for collaboration and impact in Nepal.
Together, we hope to turn connections into collaboration and knowledge into lasting impact.

Nepal-EU STEM Conference 2026, Tubingen, Germany

Nepal’s scientific and technological development can be significantly strengthened by leveraging the knowledge, expertise, networks, and experience of Nepali scientists and professionals working abroad. The Nepali scientific diaspora, particularly across Europe, represents an important pool of expertise in bioscience, biotechnology, research, education, healthcare, and innovation. However, these resources and professional networks remain underutilized in supporting Nepal’s research and development ecosystem.

Many diaspora scientists are already exploring opportunities to collaborate with universities, research institutes, hospitals, and start-ups in Nepal, either through direct collaboration, mentorship, knowledge exchange, or potential return to Nepal. Recognizing diaspora engagement as an important form of national soft power, the Nepal-EU STEM Conference 2026, themed “Connecting Scientific Diaspora – For Nepal, From Nepali,” aims to create a platform for meaningful dialogue and collaboration between Nepal-based institutions and the Nepali scientific diaspora in Europe.

As a past winner of the Chemistry Challenge, RIBB Team was invited to join a very special milestone: the 10th edition of the Elsevier Green & Sustainable Chemistry Conference, which took place between 18-20 May 2026 in Dresden, Germany.

This year’s conference also marks the 10th anniversary of the Chemistry Challenge, and foundation was keen to celebrate this occasion together with alumni community whose work has helped shape the challenge over the past decade.

RIBB Team paid a visit to Quadram Institute in Norwich to further deepen the research collaboration between both the research institutes. Three days visit was focused on following events and discussions.

1) RIBB Seminar was organized to showcase ongoing research activities related to Food Science.
2) Funding meeting with JIDCuk Charitable Trust to work together in the field of Nepalese Traditional Fermented Food.
3) A visit to National Collection of Yeast Cultures (NCYC) to kickstart a research collaboration on establishing RIBB Culture Collection Center (RICCO).

RIBB researchers recently completed three week long research training at Center for Parasitology, School of Infection and Immunology, and Shared Research Facilities (SRF), College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences, University of Glasgow.

The Visiting Scientist Program was more focused on building capacity (human capital, research infrastructure and project development) on genomics and metabolomics related to traditional fermented foods and neglected tropical diseases in collaboration with University of Glasgow.

The Sixth Episode of RIBB Support Seminar Series (Building a research-ecosystem in Nepal - Episode 6) & Third Nepal-UK Seminar is going to be organized at The Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre, University of Glasgow, UK on Thursday, 30 April, 2026.

The Nepal-UK Seminar has following objectives:

1) To share insights and experiences from the previous RIBB Support Seminars held in Edinburgh, Terschelling, Barcelona. Newcastle, and Pokhara.

2) To highlight collaborative Nepal-UK research efforts and public engagement activities to a broader audience in Glasgow.

3) To explore collaboration on traditional fermented food systems research carried out at RIBB.

4) To strengthen partnerships with UK collaborators and Nepali Diaspora living in the UK to explore opportunities for accessing UK funding systems.

5) To support and raise Endowment funds for RIBB's research, development, and innovation (RD&I) initiatives in Nepal.

Our effort on organizing Nepal Science Festival biennially has been summaried in this collective paper published in Journal of Parasitology.

First Nepal Science Festival was organized in Chitwan & Nawalparasi in 2023.

Second Nepal Science Festival was organized in Jhapa in 2025.

Himalayan Yak Project Going Global at Edinburgh Science Festival 2026. A meaningful discussions!!

We really enjoyed being part of the panel discussion at 'Doing Science at the Roof of the World', a fascinating event presented by the Edinburgh Science Festival, bringing together scientists from UK and Nepal to discuss a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative project aiming to study antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in yaks.

It was great to share the stories of how RIBB - Research Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology and the The University of Edinburgh came together to collaborate in this project.

We discussed how, in the remote Himalayan regions of Nepal, yaks are central to daily life—supporting transport, farming, food, milk, and wool production. However, crossbreeding with lowland cattle, where antibiotic use is more common, raises important concerns about AMR in yak populations. We also explored the implications for yak milk safety, as well as the unique challenges of conducting scientific research in Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park.

During the event, we also had the opportunity to highlight the role that Engage Nepal with Science has played in recent years in making science more relevant, accessible, and empowering for people in Nepal.

A truly thought-provoking discussion highlighting the importance of global collaboration in addressing health and sustainability challenges.

Together with our colleagues from RIBB - Research Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology (Kathmandu, Nepal), Roslin Institute & Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and Global Agriculture and Food Systems (The University of Edinburgh) we’ll explore how antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is emerging in remote Himalayan regions. 🧬
