As SEO professionals, we’ve all had that moment. The conversation goes like this:
💬 𝐒𝐄𝐎 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭: SEO is a long-term game.
💬 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭: Got it! So… can you get me on page 1 tomorrow?
If only it were that simple, right? 🤔

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 — 𝐒𝐄𝐎 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. It’s about building a solid foundation, establishing trust, and growing over time. But that’s not always clear to clients, especially when they’re used to the instant results of paid ads.

Here’s why SEO takes time:
𝟏. 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧: Google doesn’t immediately recognize the value of your website. Crawling, indexing, and ranking all take time to process.
𝟐. 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞: Trust and authority in your niche take months — sometimes even years — to develop. Link-building and earning respect from search engines is a long-term strategy.

As much as we want quick wins, real SEO success is about making the right moves at the right time, and being patient as the results compound.

So the next time a client asks for fast results:

Changing URLs for pages in “Crawled – currently not indexed” or “Discovered – currently not indexed” is one of the greatest SEO mistakes you might never recover from.
The September 2022 helpful content update didn’t just shake rankings, it exposed habits many SEOs were relying on. One of them is Refreshing content by simply changing URLs.
At some point, that trick worked. I used it too. A new URL looked like a new page. Google gave it a second look. But that era is gone.
Today, when a page shows as “Crawled – currently not indexed,” Google has already seen the page, evaluated it, and made a decision not to include it in search results
And when it says “Discovered – currently not indexed,” Google is saying “I know this page exists, but I’m not even convinced it’s worth crawling yet.”
That’s not a technical issue. That’s a value signal.
Here’s where most people get it wrong
They panic. Then they do what feels “smart”:
- Change the URL
- Resubmit
- Hope Google sees it as new
But Google isn’t new to this game.
Changing the URL doesn’t reset the quality of the page. It just resets your signals.
You lose:
- Accumulated crawl history
- Internal link equity
- Any trust that page was starting to build
And the worst case is, you create duplicate or competing versions of the same weak content… which makes things even worse.
However, what Google wants and it’s telling you is: “We saw your page. It’s not strong enough to deserve a spot… yet.”
That “yet” matters. Because this is not a penalty. It’s a filter.
Most pages in this state are there because of:
- Thin or surface-level content
- Weak internal linking
- Search intent mismatch
- Duplicate or near-duplicate pages
What you should do instead of changing url is to Improve the page you already have.
Not slightly. Properly.
- Add meaningful visuals that actually explain something
- Strengthen internal links from relevant, indexed pages
- Expand the content where it’s clearly lacking depth
- Align the page with what people are actually searching for
- Clean up meta signals and structure
- Fix usability issues (especially mobile)
Then…
Validate the fix. And wait.
Yes, wait.
Because indexing is not a button you press. It’s a decision Google makes over time.
SEO used to reward clever shortcuts. Now it rewards patience and usefulness. You can’t trick your way into the index anymore. You have to deserve it.
If you’re dealing with a lot of “Crawled but not indexed” pages right now, don’t change url, it will affect other performing pages.
Fix the content. Strengthen the signals. Then give it time. That’s the part most business owners don’t want to hear… but it’s what works now.
