Grey Ridge Vineyard

Grey Ridge Vineyard Vineyard accommodation, wine tasting, platters, boutique wine sales and of course beautiful views!

Grey Ridge Vineyard - this page gives you short snippets about the latest adventure of Paul and Sue Keast, who gave up the corporate life to pursue their dreams of owning and working a vineyard in Central Otago, NZ. Who knew a few years ago that we would now be grappling with viticulture, cellar door tastings, "Vineyard Experience" accommodation and face to face marketing of delicious wine! We are

loving this life with all of its challenges, and although the learning curve is steep, it's certainly not boring :)

Small enough to survive the storms yesterday!

The vineyard was battered by heavy rain and very gusty winds, but NOTHING like the rest of the country 😵‍💫 so we are very grateful.
Tiday the sun is shining and the breeze is gentle 🎉🥰

So, how many times does firewood keep you warm?

I figure that it's at least 7 times: 1) chop down the tree, 2) chop up the tree, into rounds, 3) split the rounds, 4) haul and stack the firewood, 5) bring the firewood indoors, 6) light the fire (and enjoy with a Grey Ridge Vineyard wine) and then 7) take out the ashes.

While waiting for the vines to start growing a big job has been to get firewood for the fire. The firewood in the shed is for winter next year; the firewood under the trees is for the year after.

We are always looking for more trees, especially 'wilding pines', which are a big problem here in Central Otago. A big thank-you to Thyme Hill Vineyard for the wilding pines that will keep us warm in the winters to come.

It was quite cold last night😳🥶 but the sunrise was spectacular!
The frost sprinklers went on at 10pm and it was -3C for most of the night - which meant there was an impressive crop of icicles on display this morning. I love the ice-encased weeds on the ground; they look very alien in the close-up shot😂

So today Winter is back with a vengeance - snow down to 300m on the Dunstan Range. We are at 220m so no snow here. But we have advanced budswell on the grapes and so we now need to run the frost fighting system (water sprinklers) to keep the emerging shoots safe.

Lots of interrupted nights in the forecast to start the frost fighting system, at least until the middle of November. We normally have between 15 and 20 frost events per season.

Come for a visit and see for yourself Grey Ridge Vineyard

Early morning views like this still bring joy to my heart ❤️
I realised the other day that I have been silent for almost a year 😳 because I got out of the habit ☹️
And I thought you might be bored with the same old photos, AND life became super busy with the Cellar Door and our Vineyard experience for guests in our accommodation!
But no more excuses - I am going to resume showcasing our gorgeous vineyard😆😍

Spring has arrived.

We have a small house orchard around the house with Apricot, Peach, Plum, Cherry, Apple, Pear and Quince. We get heaps of fruit each year and share with friends etc.

The apricot tree is always first out and has to be protected from frost to get any fruit at the end of summer. A water sprinkler does the job nicely.

We have also water blasted the front terrace and cleaned up the outdoor furniture to get ready for house guests and private tasting groups. Just call us if you have a small group and want to reserve the terrace for a tasting - groups from 6 to 16 people are perfect.

Looking forward to a new season and visitors from NZ and all over the world... go to www.greyridge.co.nz to see what we offer...

Finally, a photo of a NZ Falcon (or Karearea) on the vineyard. Saw this one just finishing off a snack that it had caught this afternoon. The NZ Falcon (on the post) is much smaller than the Swamp Harrier (often just called a Hawk or Kāhu) on the right. The hawk somehow got under the nets and had to be let out - it's only happened once in 10 years and had a happy end.

While we have been busy finished the pruning we are always looking at the winter wonderland that surrounds the vineyard. While cold, sometimes down to -8 deg C, there is always something beautiful to appreciate.

Spring is around the corner, but we are still open for wine tastings.

We also have accommodation on the vineyard so that you can experience everything 'first-hand', check out www.GreyRidge.co.nz

It was a great feeling to complete three major jobs on the vineyard last Friday. We finished the pruning (after 2 months work), the tie-down (after 2 weeks work) and the mulching (after 2 days work) all on the same day! We are early this year, maybe we are getting faster? Next jobs are a variety of maintenance activities, but otherwise we are ready for spring!

We are also running a special on our wine - contact us via e-mail ([email protected]) for details.

The vineyard is now looking very neat and tidy after being trimmed. The vines grow too long and need to be trimmed back so that the energy goes into growing great tasting grapes and not excessive amount of stalk and leaf. Grape wine tastes a lot better than stalky leaf wine! The trimmer handles a full row in one pass and requires careful driving and lots of concentration to get the job done. It takes about 6 hours to trim the entire vineyard and needs to be done after the wires have been lifted and clipped together (see previous post).

Lots of people are visiting the Cellar Door this summer - give us a call to arrange a tasting and platter experience! 🍷
